Pros: Many beautiful trees. Good roads. Lots of things to do.
Cons: Traffic. Summer heat. Southern charm lost.
The Bottom Line: If you visit, you can have a great time. But the ills of big city life will likely affect your visit as well.

| smspf's Full Review: Atlanta |
At the outset, I must mention that I am not a native Atlantan, but my sister lives there, so I have visited it several times at different times of the year.
Atlanta, like most large areas, has a little of everything.
The good: lots of lush greenery and pine trees due to abundant rainfall. The Chattahoochee River park area near Roswell offers hiking, biking, jogging and canoeing for the active person. Piedmont Park in midtown, currently being renovated, is a welcome green escape from city life. Buckhead in north Atlanta is the hip part of town, where you will find places like ESPN Zone, Starbucks and other trendy establishments as well as the wealthiest citizens and their mansions. The annual Peachtree 10K roadrace, the nation's largest, snakes thru the area every July 4th bringing out supportive citizens. MARTA, the light rail system, works pretty well. It goes to all parts of the city proper, but not the furthest reaches of the entire metro area. The climate is generally nice, though thunderstorms are frequent , winters can be cold and summers will be hot. There are probably more malls here than anywhere, with Lenox Square and Perimeter Mall in the north the most reknown for their upscale tenants I guess. CNN Center, World of Coke and Atlanta Underground are known tourist attractions and all within walking distance of each other downtown. All worth a visit I would add.
The bad: Traffic and congestion are real bad. The city has grown too much too fast, especially in the outlying areas that frankly were not designed to handle the population influx. Use MARTA whenever you can to avoid the nightmare rush hours. Also, there seems to be 4 different Atlantas socially: poor blacks, rich blacks, poor whites and rich whites, and neither of them seem to be concerned with the others too much. The most liberal area of town is just east and north of downtown. All this makes Atlanta seem less southern, less gentile than one would expect. The crime rate is relatively high, so be aware.
