| dlockeretz's Full Review: Atlanta |
Having recently spent a week in Atlanta for a wedding, I enjoyed my time in the city, especially the air conditioned parts thereof.
As a roller coaster junkie, my favorite attraction of Atlanta is nearby Six Flags over Georgia, where my Six Flags season pass entitled me to partake in many excellent rides including the Georgia Scorcher, Great American Scream Machine and Mindbender. The park is cleaner and more conveniently laid out than most of the other Six Flags parks I have been to.
Underground Atlanta, a tourist-heavy shopping area, is an interesting and unique attraction; a nice place for lunch. Nearby is the World of Coca Cola, which was amusing but slightly dissappointing, more like an advertisement than a museum. Nonetheless there were some entertaining videos, a place where one can sample many varieties of soda made by the company (including pineapple, apricot and orange cola) and a gift shop which is probably the only place in the world where one can get a Coke chess set.
Highly touted Buckhead was also somewhat of a disappointment; anticipating historical architecture in a wooded area, I got what was basically a hip strip mall with good bars and dining and shopping, but nothing particularly memorable.
The Atlanta Botanical Gardens feature many attractive exhibits for a comparatively low price. Included is a tropical aviary, Japanese gardens and a children's exhibit which is likely to appeal to adults as well.
Hartsfield Airport, while one of the busiest in the world, is comparatively easy to navigate, and is no more than a twenty minute drive (with no traffic) form downtown. Atlanta's freeways consist of three roads that intersect in the downtown area and a loop highway connecting them. Navigating around greater Atlanta is fairly easy, but downtown, the one-way streets are going to keep visitors honest.
I found that Atlanta, despite a hot climate, has a wide variety of activities with universal appeal. If you are tired of the coasts, trip down south might be in order.
