Okay everyone, I will share to you Atlanta's best kept secret-Virginia Highlands. The Highlands is basically a neighborhood, close to Piedmont Park and the Midtown area, and reminiscent of New York Soho's early days or Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. The largest openly gay area in Atlanta, PRIDE flags hang from old Southern porches just a few blocks from powerhouse investment banks and law firms. The Highlands is also home to some of the best restaurants, bars and boutiques in the city. Mitzi and Romano's, two of the hottest designers have their boutique here and not in Phipps Plaza for a reason, as does designer Bill Hallman of Sushi, Sake, and Bill Hallman (aficionados should go to Verdict on North Highland Avenue), whose pants are simply incredible. Atlanta's hottest spa, Key Lime Pie, (written up in Vogue) has a location here as does the ever popular Van Michael Salon.
The Highlands is a day trip, an evening, a home to all. Never pretentious, always colorful and full of flavor, the Highlands is a wonderful option for those who want a change from the Buckhead scene but not the drug-laden Little Five Points teenage angst ambience. Keep an eye out on this neighborhood folks, housing costs have already skyrocketed and with its proximity to Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead, the Highlands just could be the next San Francisco...
