Recently I visited Savannah for a family function, however, I stayed a few extra days over. While there, I got the craving for some good seafood, and asked my uncle, a Savannah native, where the best seafood restaurant was. He promptly, without hesitation directed me to Williams.
Williams is not in the heart of Savannah, but rather along Tybee Road, on the way out to Tybee Island, Savannah's beach. A pleasant drive, you pass lots of marshland and can see many wonderful sights.
Williams is a family owned restaurant, that was opened in 1936 and is now operated by the third generation, grandchildren of the original owners Tom and Leila Williams. My uncle told me that until the last couple of years, no beer or wine was served at the restaurant, this was a change that was implemented with the third generation running Williams.
Our party of four arrived at about 7:30pm on a Saturday evening. Outside the restaurant it was packed, I was sure they were going to tell us at least an hours wait. But surprise, they told us it should only be thirty minutes, and I was more than pleased, when we were seated in about fifteen minutes.
Williams can seat nearly 500 people. The place is packed with all different types of parties, couples, families, large groups, and the young waitstaff is moving quickly to get everyone served. Wear whatever you want, shorts, jeans, sandals, just about anything goes here. Williams offers salads, pastas, steak, and of course wonderful seafood.
Appetizers: $4.95-$7.95
Though we did not order any appetizers, you can get a shrimp cocktail, bloomin' onion, wings, or a bucket of steamed oysters.
Soups: $4.25
Williams offers the soup of the day or the crab stew. My boyfriend ordered the crab stew. Upon arrival, it did not look like much, pale white and rather liquidy. But, when he dipped his spoon inside the cup, magic happened. Yes, chunks of fresh crabmeat were hidden below the surface. He promptly finished the crab stew off with the oysters crackers that he was offered crumbled up in it.
Entrees: $8.95-$13.95
Entrees are served with your choice of two side dishes. You can choose from green beans, coleslaw, baked potato, or french fries.
There are six seafood platters to choose from in Mate's (small) or Captain's (large) sized portions: shrimp, fish, deviled crab, fried catfish, scallops and oysters, these can be ordered fried or broiled. Two in my party ordered the fried fish. Now this fish is not your normal batter dipped fried fish, the fish is just lightly breaded and fried. According to their menu, "our fried foods are hand breaded in our own Williams' Breading and cooked in pure cholesterol free cotton seed oil. "Two generous pieces are brought out along with your sides.
I ordered a crab au gratin dish, along with my two sides, I also received bread sticks. The huge chunks of crab were covered with a creamy au gratin sauce and then cheese was broiled on top. This dish was absolutely wonderful. I used my breadsticks to make sure no sauce was left in my dish. The best part about my meal, no crab shells. I hate places where you order a dish with crab in it and you are forever, finding small pieces of crab shell in your meal.
Williams also offers a New York Strip, Alaskan Snow Crab Legs, Low Country Boil, Stuffed Shrimp, and Shrimp Pasta, to name a few.
Kids also have four choices, fish, shrimp, chicken fingers, or grilled cheese, served with fries and applesauce, for only $4.25.
So next time you are in Savannah, drive on over to Williams Seafood for dinner. However, don't be surprised to find a crowd waiting outside, because everyone knows that it is the best seafood in town.
