| jencat's Full Review: Kauai |
We visited Kauai in May 2003. I was lured by images from Spielberg's Jurassic Park. The beauty seen in the movie is easily witnessed throughout the island, but the actual movie sites are difficult if not illegal to reach. We did drive to the site of the Jurassic Park gates behind Keahua Arboretum. We followed directions that I got off the internet with our four wheel drive truck. People in cars had to turn back due to "road" (if you can call it that) conditions. At the end of the road, we found the two concrete poles where the gates reportedly once stood, but also two very beat up trucks with bullet holes (apparently owned by hunters, who we could hear shooting in the distance). We cut our visit short for safety reasons. We stayed at the Kauai Coast Resort at Beachboy for 3 nights. I'd give it 3 stars for: attractive decor, not enough towels at times, fewer towel racks, paper thin walls, you need to check out pool towels at the front desk. At the end of our visit we stayed at the Princeville Resort for 2 nights. I'd give the Princeville almost 4 stars for: nice decor, impressive lobby, awesome view of the mountains and Hanalei Bay, robes to use for your stay, guest rooms really nothing special, way too expensive for what you get (you're paying for the hotel's phenomenal location). We did a helicopter tour with Inter-Island Helicopters (see separate review)- which I highly recommend. We also did a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast with Blue Dolphin Charters including an introductory SCUBA dive. Blue Dolphin provided us with a poor experience, primarily because of the SCUBA due to: instruction given on board (made me dizzy and we missed some of the beautiful views), very little time to get used to your gear in the water, very few fish to see IF you made it down. The people who didn't pay the extra money for SCUBA snorkled and were likewise disappointed with the fish. Also, after the first hour of the five hour trip the sheltered area of the boat stinks of urine (the restrooms are just below). If going back I'd probably just do a sunset cruise of Na Pali with a different company. I would recommend the 3-4 hour round trip hike of the Na Pali coast on Kalalau trail. The hike is somewhat strenuous, very muddy (when we went), slippery, but very beautiful. Bring your hiking boots, water, and your sense for adventure and you'll have a good time. Another thing you should bring (and use) in Kauai is sunscreen. We saw plenty of tourists who were lobster red.
