My favorite thing to do on my favorite island is enjoying good food at a good restaurant with good wine and great ambiance. So here goes..my review of a week's worth of eating in Kauai!
First night...THE BEACH HOUSE is located at 5022 Lawai Road in Koloa. www.the-beach-house.com. This is one of my very favorite restaurants on Kauai. It is right on LAWAI BEACH and at sunset there is not a table available, unless you have very prior reservations. We sat by the open doors, right by the ocean and it was just like dining outside. The food was excellent! I had Macadamian encrusted Mahi Mahi with rice and veggies. It was wonderful. My husband had scallops, very good and nicely presented. Both portions were very generous and there was no need of a dessert. Service was with a smile and the food and ambiance were next to none. A big #1 in my book!
Second day...."DALI'S DELI" for breakfast. It is located across from the Post Office in Koloa Town. It is billed as "a Deli by day and Italian Restaurante at night". We had great omelets and cappacino in the morning, but I can not comment on the night fare.
Second evening...THE KALAHEO STEAK HOUSE..located in Kalaheo, which is a cute, little lay-back cowboy town. We both had filets, which were done perfectly, but had little flavor. The salads were better than the steak. I guess it is what the cows eat, whatever that is! Fun time and very friendly people, but not real good food. Not really recommended.
Third evening...PLANTATION RESTAURANT located at 2253 Poipu Rd, Koloa. This is a beautiful restaurant surrounded by beautiful gardens. We dined in an historic plantation home, sitting on an open-air veranda overlooking the beautiful gardens. It was even elegant in the rain! I had the macademian encrusted lamb chops and Tom had the special fish of the day. Both meals were served with mashed potatoes and veggies. Wonderful food and vino! Reservations suggested. e-mail pgardens@aloha.net
Fourth day...Lunch at DUKES at the Marriott. Wonderful experience as usual at Dukes. We had fish tacos and split a huge Hula Pie! The tacos were not as good as in San Diego, but the Hula Pie was sinful...all 4 inches of it!
Fourth evening...THE HOUSE OF SEAFOOD at 1941 Poipu Road, Koloa is listed as one of the best on the island. Tom had swordfish which he thought was just "ok". I couldn't face any more fish or sauces, so I had a large clam chowder and crab stuffed baked potato. The dinners were ok, but there was not much atmosphere, which didn't rate high on my list. We probably would not go back, as it was over-rated.
Next day..breakfast at the HANAPEPE CAFE 3830 Hanapepe Rd. in Hanapepe. A charming little cafe in a small town, it beakoned us. It was billed as "gourmet vegetarian Italian". I had a smoothie and health-nut toast. Tom had eggs and toast with potatoes. Cute with it's little gift shop, but no star rating!
Next night...BRENNECKES BEACH BROILER at Poipu Beach Park. Very enjoyable and right on the beach. Just right for an informal evening. Good hamburger with pineapple and MaiTai!
Next day...Lunch at Zelos Beach House in Hanalei. Actually, it is not on the beach, but has a beach house atmosphere. After Zeloburgers and fries, we were well fed! Good food and location!
Last night....We dined at ROY'S, which I believe is the king of restaurants! Although it is located in a shopping center, the atmosphere is elegant. We had a table on the patio by an open window. The restaurant was packed, so the window afforded us a quieter spot. Tom had tiger shrimp and I had habachi grilled salmon with rice. The dinners again weere excellent, but hard to choose from on such a large menu. This restaurant gets my vote for the best food on the island! The mac-nut tort for dessert was unreal! We saved the best for last!
