| joli's Full Review: Kauai |
Kauai is the Hawaiian island used by Hollywood the most to portray long, white, sandy beaches and lush tropical areas. The island is covered with valleys, gulches, rivers, mountains, gardens, waterfalls, parks, and even a canyon; but even with all that, the beaches are still its best feature. Here's my list of can-not-miss beaches.
Anini Beach Park
Anini beach park has the largest protected reef in all of Hawaii. The reef is about 200 yards offshore and it creates the calmest waters on the North shore of Kauai. The beach park is best for windsurfing lessons, just drive in, pick a teacher, and you are off!
Polihale State Park
This beach park is a little off the beaten path, but worth the extra effort. Off the highway you go through old sugar cane fields (complete with sugar cane) on an old cane road. You'll come out of the sugar cane to the parking area and on your right will be the mountains, on your left will be white pristine beach as far as the eye can see. I have never seen people swim in the waters here, the surf makes it dangerous, but the beachcombing is excellent and the sand dunes are famous for their size.
Poipu Beach Park
Poipu beach is the safest and most popular beach on the island. It has a coral reef and large lava boulders that protect the beach and the bay from surf. The swimming, snorkeling and diving are excellent here due to the calm, clear waters and abundance of colorful fish.
Barking Sands Beach
Unfortunately, this three mile long beach is within the Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility, so unless you are military you can't get in. But, if you are military, you must not miss it. Go in the gatem hang a right past the outdoor theatre, and drive till you see the beach cabins. This beach is long, wide, empty, and has the prettiest blue-green water you've ever seen.
Kekaha Beach Park
Swimming and snorkeling can be dangerous at Kekaha beach but there are great picnic spots and an incredible view of Niihau, the Forbidden Island across the channel.
Lumahai Beach
Remember the 1958 movie The South Pacific? This is that famous beach. It is a dazzling white crescent-shaped slice of heaven that you can squish between your toes. The water is blue, blue, blue, the palm trees are green, tall, and swaying, the breeze is soft and caressing, and all is right with the world on this beach. There are strong currents here, so just lay on the beach and soak up some beauty.
Kalapaki Beach
Kalapaki probably offers the most activities in one spot - such as fishing, snorkeling, windsurfing, boogie-boarding, volleyball, and jet-skiing. Plus, you can explore the nearby lagoons; a freshwater tropical wildlife sanctuary.
Kauai is the Hawaiian Island with the most beaches per mile - it boasts over 40 miles of beach! Just driving down the road toward your destination, all you will see on the ocean side is beach sand, and water. Since Kauai is the oldest Hawaiian island there has been plenty of time for these gorgeous beaches to develop for your enjoyment. Don't come without your sunscreen.
