In the last 7 years, I have been to Lanai about 6 times... in short, I love the place. The island is definitely one of my favorites to visit (second to the "Big Island" - Island of Hawaii).
I have been to the two major resorts on the island, The Lodge at Keole and the Manele Bay Hotel. These two resort are absolutely gorgeous! But this is not the reason why I am writing this opinion. I would like to try to share with you something else - not mentioned in any other opinion.
If you desire a relaxing atmosphere, set in a beautiful country atmosphere, with a gorgeous sun, constant cool breeze and an "outback" (with grass and tress everywhere) just a mile away, the island of Lanai may certainly be your paradise!
Here are some aspects that truly make the island of Lanai special:
- Wonderful beaches (excellent for snorkeling). The beaches are cleaner and far less crowded than the beaches of Oahu.
- If you drive a car down some of the side-roads, you are almost guaranteed to see wild deer. The deer are scared of people and have a really good sense of smell, so if you are hiking or walking, they may run away before you can see them. **There are also deer that are held in a resident's front yard. I believe it is a family of four deer with two generations. You can see them right from the street. The deer were raised there and it is believed that if released, they will not be able to survive on their own. They are surely a sight to see. You can imagine what the front yard looks like during the Christmas season!
- Go on a nice hike. There are many trails that have many gorgeous views of the ocean and the mountain. If you go during the sunrise or sunset, you will be in for a wonderful surprise. With the lack of a major city nearby, the sunrise/sunsets are more pretty than than you could imagine.
- Take a tour around and inside the $1,000,000+ homes that are being sold behind the Lodge at Keole and near the Manele Bay Hotel. Some of them are quite beautiful!
SirMontego has written an excellent article on the Island of Lanai (in specific - the Lodge at Koele), it is titled "Lodge at Koele (Lanai, Hawaii)"
Aloha!
