Ok, first of all I used spend my summers living on Maui and probably still go there 2-3 times a year to visit family and relatives. So when my wife and I got married, where were we to honeymoon? We originally were scheduled to go to Tahiti, but couldn't get the flights we wanted so ended up going to Lanai and staying at 1 of the 2 premier resorts on the Lanai... The Manele Bay Hotel. This resort is located near the beach and a marine preserve called Manele Bay. It's sister resort is called the Lodge at Koele (modeled after an old English hunting lodge), and it is located about 15 miles inland up in the mountains of Lanai. In between, both resorts is the main city on Lanai called Lanai City.
So what did we think? We absolutely loved it. We visited for a week in October which is considered a low season for the islands. Generally most families vacation either in the summer months or in the winter. As far we were concerned, it was perfect. There were several evenings we were strolled along the beach and were the only couple there!
What did we do? We hung out at the pool and relaxed, we went snorkeling in the bay, we went hiking in the mountains (the hotel will provide you with a picnic lunch if you request one), we explored the local cuisine in Lanai City, we went to the Lodge and played miniture golf and croquet, and basically goofed off. At the same time we enjoyed the fine dining of the Manele and up at Koele. The hotels have shuttles that can take between the two resorts and Lanai City.
In short, it was the most luxurious and relaxing vacation I have ever had. While most of my vacations tend to be the adventure type vacations like climbing the Grand Teton etc., this one was very special and Lanai was definitely perfect for that. When we went back to Maui, we couldn't believe how much traffic there was and how many people there were. Perhaps that is why Bill Gates, Mr. Microsoft himself, got married and honeymooned at the Manele Bay Hotel....
