On a recent vacation to Maui, we decided that we should visit Lanai. There are only two hotels on the island, and both are extremely expensive, ($350 per night), so we really didn't want to stay there, but wanted to see it. On the plane to Maui, my wife had chatted with a man who lives on Maui and told her how to see Lanai. Here's what we did. From Lahaina, you can catch a ferry to Lanai for $25 each way. It's about a 45 minute ride over to Lanai and the day we went the weather was wonderful (we've never had a bad day in Hawaii, and have been there five times). At the dock in Lanai, there are shuttle buses that will take you to either of the hotels for a fee. We paid $10 each to take the shuttle up to the Lodge. It's about a half hour ride up into the high country and through Lanai City. We were dropped off at the front door of the Lodge and just pretended that we belonged. We walked around the grounds, saw the Orchid House, the golf course, and wonderful ponds and landscaping. A beautiful way to spend an hour or two. One interesting thing was a large number of turkeys roaming the grounds. When we were ready to go to the other hotel, we just went to the front of the Lodge and jumped in their shuttle that runs about every half hour to the Manele Bay Hotel. It is supposed to be for guests of the hotels, but at places this expensive, they don't bother the guests, so just try to look like you belong. We had brought our snorkeling gear and spent several hours on the beach snorkeling and relaxing on the beach under a tree. From the beach it is only a five minute walk back to the harbor to catch the return ferry to Lahaina. It was a great day trip and we got to see an island that we had not visited before.
There are few paved roads on Lanai and if you have the bucks and the time, rent a four-wheel drive vehicle for about $120 for the day and visit the island at your own pace and see places that we couldn't get to. All in all, it was a very enjoyable day trip to another part of paradise.
