I live in Hawaii, have visited all the major islands except Kauai, and can honestly say that Molokai offers the true Hawaiian paradise. If you want a nice, quiet vacation away from crowds and the city, go to Molokai.
I spent four days at Molokai Ranch (www.molokai-ranch.com), and had the time of my life. The ranch offers activities such as horseback riding, kayaking, whale watching, mountain biking, etc. If you like outdoor sporting adventures, you'll definitely love it here. If you're not experienced in these things, don't worry. They offer these activities at all learner levels. I had no prior experience in any of these activities before I went to the ranch, and I did fine and had a lot of fun. Mountain biking is my personal favorite. Whale watching is a close second. I got semi-seasick kayaking out in the open ocean (just a warning).
The overnight accommodations are units called "tentalows," which are enclosed tents assembled on wooden decks. They are actually quite pleasant, with beds and everything. The bathroom is located off the main deck area, and has four walls, but no roof. So, you'll be using the bathroom and showering under the open sky. It can be a bit disconcerting to see blue and clouds or stars above you when you're used to seeing the ceiling, but it is a nice experience. And it's certainly something to tell the folks at home. Each tentalow is provided with an ice-chest with bottled water and snacks in it. The only bad thing is that each tentalow doesn't have a locking door, so you will want to lock up your valuables. If I remember correctly, each unit has a safe with a combination lock for this purpose.
Meals are served at a central pavillion. Really great food. I'm a picky eater, and I had no problem finding good stuff to eat.
If you live in or near a city, you usually don't get to see the night sky the way it was meant to be seen. At Molokai Ranch, the sky is absolutely clear and free of light pollution. Unless you've been in an equally remote area or at the top of a mountain, you have never seen a clearer sky. It's quite amazing; that is the way stars were meant to be seen.
If you have transportation, go into town at night, and buy Molokai Bread. You'll have to ask for directions. Anyone on Molokai will know what you're talking about; just say that you want to get Molokai Bread. It involves finding the alley behind the bread shop, knocking on the door, giving your order and money, and waiting outside until the bread is made. They give it to you hot, right out of the oven, and you can choose a variety of toppings. This is the most delicious bread you will ever eat. The atmosphere of the alley sounds a little spooky, but it's absolutely safe. In fact, there will probably be a line of people also waiting for bread. It's one of my favorite things about Molokai.
This island is not crowded at all. That's usually a good thing, but if you're looking for fast food restaurants or a good shopping selection, you're not going to find it there.
