In most of Germany, you get "pomme frittes" with your schnitzel. (French fries) In Bavaria, you get the noddles instead of the "pomme frittes." It's called "Spetzula," and I apologize to Peter and 401402 for my rotten German spelling.

A GREAT review. It brought back memories of my childhood.

..and now I wanna go there and do that again! I went to the colonies for the first time last year with my wife. I loved it! Having lived for 3 years in Germany, the colonies was extra special for me! I loved Germany! Now, after reading your review, I will have to grab the wife and take that trip to the colonies again! Between Galena, IL and the Amana Colonies, we're never going to be home anymore! :) Great review!

Your description is perfect, you described it well. I have been to Amana many time, we stop for a meal every time we took a trip to Iowa City and now on our way to Chicago to visit our family. Just wondering where in Iowa you lived in a previous life? You must have lived close to this place.

Many east and west coast people speed through the mid-west thinking there is nothing here but corn and soy beans. We have many ethnic communities who preserve their heritage in different way. Many worth a visit. Good review for Iowa.

Even though I live in Iowa, I have never been down to the colonies. I am in northern Iowa, just 5 miles south of MN, so I don't get that far south. That would be an interesting place to go to sometime on a roadtrip with the family.

in our two years in South Dakota, but there are some wonderful people there, that's for sure!

I belonged to a storyteller's group in Sioux City, and the people there are still great friends...

For friendly hospitality, the plains states can't be beat!
