I remember when Shreveport Louisiana was nothing but a small town with a race track. Boy has it grown. My fiance and I made plans to meet a fellow Epinionater DaniellelBeeson and her husband for the weekend. As I thought I knew the city so well it made sense her living in Texas and me in Arkansas to meet somewhere in the middle. Shreveport-Bossier was definitely it.
As soon as My fiance & I arrived through the darkness this wasn't the same city we would drive to in our teens to buy beer on Sunday. Half oft the city is nothing but Casinos! Everywhere you look there is a Casino. It was obvious that little Shreveport had become a large gaming city.
We spent a night at the casinos, blowing money & generally just having a good time. We played at Harrah's Louisiana Downs. A place im all too familiar with. The race track that is, what they have made of it though, its just awesome. I know no other way to describe a track that was so so that's now very grand. They have plenty of places to blow your money on gaming but they also have some other places that are well known and not so well known places to eat, drink and enjoy throughout your leisurely stay.
The city is both adult and child friendly. If you like bowling you're all set just hit the boardwalk for shopping eating and bowling! If that's a little lame for your tots turn them on to paint ball.....there are many places to play. There are more than 20 museums and galleries of art, five different gardens to balk at the beauty (which is no small feat Bossier-Shreveport was not all that attractive 12 years ago).
You can also choose from any number of restaurants to enjoy day or night if you know where to look. Anything from your typical Wendy burger to home cooked Cajun Shreveport sports 100s of eateries, anything you desire from the smallest budget to the largest this city can accommodate you.
By far my favorite place in Shreveport is the down town area. Full of nightlife, clubs, after hours places to grab snacks and cocktails, the beauty of the historical buildings downtown are enough to enjoy an evening out in Shreveport. You can go dancing, listen to live music, enjoy movies, you name it, this city has it.
Clubs are in no short supply so if club hopping is so your fancy you wont be let down.
For the sportsman fishing & hunting is one of Shreveport's attractions. Yes, the city's grown but there is no lack of parks and campgrounds or places to fish and hunt. You must have a gaming license (no not the one for slots) in order to participate for a nominal fee it may be worth your while.
Art is also prominent in this southern nook of the US. There are galleries galore and many talented local artist to mull over their profound work. As if that isn't enough to keep you busy, you can enjoy not only horse racing but hockey, football, baseball, basketball and of course golf.
Which was one of the place my Fiance hoped to visit, many green courses but sadly it rained the entire weekend.
We live approximately 4 hours from Bossier-Shreveport, if you don't live there this may be confusing but the two cities intertwine so when locals speak of the city its always Shreveport-Bossier or vise versa. One-second your in Shreveport and as if you cross a magical line your in Bossier City.
Both are places ive always loved to visit in the fall and spring but summer s a sweltering there and the extremely hot, humid weather just isn't my idea of a good time so I stay far far away.
I have been going to the city since I was 17 years old, like most people my age, we would go because 1) you can buy beers on Sunday which isn't possible in Arkansas and 2) if you were 18 you could go to any bar and drink. I enjoyed the shopping and there were plenty of places do to it, high end department stores and small mom and pop shops with very unique items, and of course the infamous horse racing. Which might I add is a gorgeous track even more so now that Harrahs has set up around it.
Its a lovely city that has grown because o the gaming community but the gaming owners have given so much back to the community the city is a pure joy to visit. And hopefully well be able to go back soon.
We had such a wonderful time and although the weather was bad and kept us from doing much sight seeing we have promised to go back and visit more of the attractions. There were so many places I wanted to show Dani and her husband one weekend is just not enough.
So if you get the chance make sure you have more than a few days and bring lots of money, you can find many places to spend it. It one of the south's underrated treasures. Its just there waiting to be discovered.
