I lived in Shreveport for years 6-16, and it is certainly one of the most interesting places in the United States. But not because of normal reasons. It is because there are so many facets to visiting the Port City. There is something in Shreveport for the Gamblers, the City Slickers, and the country bumpkins (mostly for the gamblers and country bumpkins).
For the wildman in all of us, there is a huge Las Vegas atmosphere emerging in the Port City USA. The Casino business is dominating the Red River, as Harrah's, Isle of Capri, Horseshoe, and Casino Magic all hold posts on the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway. There's always a party on the Red these days, as people from all over the South and most importantly the ArklaTex are coming together to PARTY IN THE PORT! Many clubs have emerged down on the waterfront such as MALIBU BEACH CLUB that will rock your world to the crack of dawn.
For the Modernman in all of us, Shreveport offers a major Dallas aspect to visitors. There is certainly not the shopping atmosphere that Dallas offers, but Shreveport, because of the Casino business, is sprouting up many new things. Huge new movie theaters, new hospitals, a state of the art arena, and many great new restaurants are taking the Shreveport-Bossier Metro Area by storm. Shreveport is almost a Mini-Dallas, as Dallas is only three hours down the road, and is a constant model for what Shreveport wants to be.
And finally, for the countryboy in all of us, Shreveport goes beyond the call of duty. Just like the founding fathers of Shreveport back in the 1800s, the modern Porters love to get CRAZY. A great place for this is a Shreveport Captains baseball game. The Captains are the AA Giants farm club, and play in one of the nicest AA Ballparks ever designed (By Mark Williamson in the 80s). The Captains fans are known throughout the Texas League as the loudest and most raucous. I got to experience this during my last visit to Shreveport. The fans sitting next to me's goal for the entire night was to have a player from the opposing team flip them off: it happened, as the Captains fans were going NUTS! Also there is room for more countryboy actions, such as line dancing, getting plastered at a local bar, or even going mudding in a 4X4 vehicle.
Shreveport is the complete vacation area for you and your family. Start the day with a great lunch at a Shreveport Original such as Strawns, and then check out a flick at the new Tinseltown. Then make your way to a Captains afternoon game, and get flipped off with the Crazy fans. Finish your evening at the Casinos, and win yourself millions! the Port city awaits!
