Pros: It's a small town that thinks it's a big city. Or is it the other way around?
Cons: Winter sometimes lasts up to four or five weeks here. Brrrr!

There's no gambling in Shreveport! Period! There's no gambling anywhere in Louisiana for that matter. It was outlawed years ago along with prostitution. It is illegal and expressly prohibited by the state constitution. Happily for our economy though, Gaming is perfectly legal and thriving in the state of Louisiana. See, if you take out the "B" and the "L" from the word Gambling, it makes everything ok, less of a threat.
The Gaming Joints
I like Louisiana Downs a lot. They offer 80 days of live thoroughbred racing during the summer and fall. Hollywood Park announcer Chris Kotulak was calling races there before getting the call up to the majors, we'll see what his replacement can do. The building and grounds are due for major renovation, but it will no doubt be in the works as they add slots to their mix of Off Track Betting and Live Racing sometime this year. The $500,000 Super Derby is a major event that takes place in the fall, and brings in some of the top horses in the country.
Horseshoe is my favorite casino (pronounced: ca-seen-uh or boat). The hotel brings in a lot of Vegas type entertainment of a second tier nature, and the facilities are spacious, generous, and somewhat luxurious.
Casino Magic is less crowded than Horseshoe, and therefor is sometimes your best bet if you want comfort. Isle of Capris is getting a little shabby, and the dealers seem to be a little crabby. Those joints are all actually in Bossier City just across the river from Shreveport. For gaming action in Shreveport, there is only Harrah's right now, and soon there will be Hollywood. Both of these are building new hotels, and Hollywood is also building a golf course.
Sports
Well they've got both kinds, huntin' and fishin'. Louisiana will never run out of water, so there will always be good fishing, and Shreveport has some wonderful lakes. There's skiing also, the real kind, water skiing. Spectator sports include the Sanford Independence bowl Game in late December and the fore mentioned Super Derby, as well as the Buy.com Shreveport Open, a recently concluded annual PGA event. I like to go to the Captains Class AA Texas League baseball games, but there is also Western Professional Hockey (the Mudbugs) and a new indoor arena league has opened the season in Shreveport with the local Bombers beating the Omaha Beef soundly.
Let's Eat!
Monsieur Patou is my favorite, (AAA - Four Diamond - Di RO' Na Recipient) if only I could afford to eat there more than once a year. The finest in French cuisine, prepared by Patou, a real French guy. I like Herby K's a whole lot, it's off the beaten path though. I also like the "Soul Food" at Pete Harris Cafe. There's great authentic Tex-Mex here, and of course, Cajun food is every where. The Italian food here is also excellent at Amore's, and Olive St. Bistro. I used to like to get coffee and eats at the Karma Cup, favorably mentioned in the Lonely Planet travel guide book, but the owners closed and joined a Zen Monastery, and haven't been seen or heard of since. If you see them wondering around town, the fat guy still owes me money. That's right, the one with the beard and the hair problem.
Culture
Symphonic, Operatic, or Pop. We've got it all. Some of your favorite musicians (and athletes and entertainers for that matter) started here. Shreveport has a long tradition of sending the brightest and best off into the world to inform and entertain you. Recently, Shreveporters who have bucked that trend are William Joyce and Kenny Wayne Sheppard. Come on guys, move already, if everyone figures out this is a great place to live, the traffic will get screwed up.
Well, there you have it, there is no gambling in Shreveport. It is "the City of Churches" after all, there is one on nearly every corner. There may not be gambling, but there is lots to do. Shreveport is situated in a subtropical rainforest, so expect a lot of natural beauty with lush gardens and dense forests. Also expect heat and humidity in the summer. Mid-July through mid-September can be brutal.
