What is it about leaves turning brilliant hues of orange, red, and rust that touches the human psyche so profoundly?
Is it the natural order of things that somewhere deep inside of us there is triggered a switch that makes us stop and for a brief moment truly appreciate the grandeur that is nature?
Or is it a simpler answer? Is it simply that the onset of Fall is a primordial reminder for humans that the seasons of change are upon us, and that our lives - and our surroundings - are moving into a new phase?
Or perhaps the answer is a bit more complex. Perhaps the leaves are saturated with color to offset the gray skies that accompany a chilly October morning, and those same leaves are giving us one final moment of summer's glory before the inevitable winter doldrums are upon us.
Maine in October is the catalyst that brings these type of questions to one's mind. And Maine allows one's mind, and one's view, to work magnificently together as a craggy coastline couples with fall foliage for a truly magical combination that delights any human lucky enough to be present.
Maine in October is simply one of the most naturally beautiful locales in these great United States.
I had that true moment of realization - a Fall epiphany - as I sat with my wife on a rock overlooking Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. Across from me sat a lonely lighthouse with waves pounding the rock base of the small island it sits upon. To my right was the Maine coastline with the colors of the foliage rainbow in abundance. The sky was turning from bright to overcast, and the seagulls seemed to sense my mood of exhilaration at being alive at that very moment.
Earlier in the day, we had visited Kennebunkport and seen Walker Point, and Arundel Harbor. Walker Point houses the summer home of President George Bush, and we had stopped and talked to a local painter as he created a watercolor of the scene. Waves and rocks and beautiful vistas lay before us as he described the history of Walker Point. Mr. Bush's maternal grandmother had purchased the land for the grand sum of $600 at the turn of the century, and had proceeded to make a family compound for her children and grandchildren. And yes - that's exactly where the "W" comes from in candidate Bush's name.
As we meandered down the ocean drive in Kennebunkport, we came upon a Arundel Harbor full of boats of all shapes and all sizes. We stopped for lunch at the Arundel Wharf Restaurant, and experienced serendipity. Exquisite cuisine coupled with a scene right out of a postcard. Great food and great scenery, when all we were really looking for was a bite to eat. Isn't it wonderful when that happens?
The food? Unbelievable. The best spinach salad my wife has ever had the pleasure to consume - perfect spinach leaves covered with a special drizzle of dressing atop a mound of fresh shelled lobster. As she smiled, I had the first bite of the best lobster roll I've ever devoured. A perfectly toasted New England roll topped with huge chunks of lobster in a very light sauce that brought out the flavor intensity that only lobster can deliver.
The view? Color saturation that rivals anything that the mind can conjure. White sailing yachts gliding silently down the inlet as the trees frame a view that could only be described as magnificent. And a feeling of peace when the world actually seems to slow down a bit. A feeling that happens so seldom in today's fast paced world. A feeling that can't be purchased, but can only be experienced.
A feeling that all is right in the world.
A feeling that in spite of days full of obstacles, being alive is truly a gift.
A truly, TRULY wonderful gift.
Don't you think it's about time you drove up Route 1 in Maine?
