Plymouth, Massachusetts was founded in 1620 and is where the Pilgrims that came over on the Mayflower landed. It's named after Plymouth, England - the place where the Mayflower originally departed from. Plymouth is the site of the first permanent European settlement in New England.
PLIMOTH PLANTATION
This is by far my favorite attraction in Plymouth.
Pilgrim Village
It's always 1627 here. This particular year was chosen because it was well documented and also because it's right before the colonists began to move beyond the original settlement.
Pilgrim Village is set up to look like the original site of the Plymouth Settlement. You'll see houses representing the homes of Pilgrim families including better known ones such as the Alden and Standish families. And there are also reproductions of the storehouses, common houses, fort/meeting house, etc.
"Villagers" are dressed in period costume and NEVER step out of character - always speaking in period dialect and if you mention something "modern" to them, they will act like they don't know what you're talking about.
This is a really neat place to get a look into the lives of the Pilgrims.
Carriage House Crafts Center
Here you'll see artisans making pottery, furniture, baskets, etc. - as they did in the old days. There's also a shop there where you can buy these wares.
Historical Theme Dining
Meals reflecting 17th century English cuisine hosted and served by "Pilgrims". Advance reservations are required! Call (508) 746-1622 for more information.
MAYFLOWER II
You'll find the Mayflower II docked at the pier in Plymouth. It is a reproduction of the Mayflower and visitors are welcome aboard. I was impressed by the great attention to detail and use of historically accurate materials.
Right beside the Mayflower II is the Mayflower Shallop, a reproduction of the work boat which the Pilgrims brought over in pieces and put together here.
OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST
Plymouth Rock- where the first Pilgrim off the boat supposedly placed his foot. Cute story, but I don't think that's really the case.
Pilgrim Hall Museum is the oldest museum in America and houses a large collection of Pilgrim possessions.
Pilgrim National Wax Museum is a must-see. It will provide you with a nice overall source of Pilgrim history. And the exhibits are cool.
Mayflower Society Museum and Library contains furniture owned by the Society of Mayflower Descendants and other items of significance.
Going to Plymouth is a day trip for me since I live in Rhode Island so I'm not familiar with places to stay there as far as inns, hotels, and such. But I do know the Miles Standish State Forest has hundreds of campsites if you're into "roughing it" and plan to stay overnight.
Plymouth is a great place to take the entire family to and learn a little more about American History. Plimouth Plantation really makes history come to life like you just stepped back into time - more interesting for the kids than sitting down and reading a book, I think :)
