Every neighborhood needs its casual restaurant where you don't need reservations to get a table and where you're likely to run into people you know. Near where I live is Chia Shiang, a Chinese restaurant with a few extras that aren't obvious from the initial impressions that this is just another anonymous place.
The vegetarian menu is extensive and tasty. My favorites are the Kung Pao Sue Gi (recommended), a peanut dish with soy "chicken", and the Orange Sue Pao (recommended), with a vegetarian "beef" in orange sauce with broccoli. For a while Chia Shiang was all-vegetarian, but they decided that they could do more business if they expanded to a full line of dishes including meat. The veg dishes are prepared in a separate kitchen, and you can get any of them with no egg if you are so inclined. This makes for easy eating if you are with a group with food allergies or special dietary needs.
If you do get there, ask for the Malaysian menu. It's hand-written (or at least it was tonight), and reflects the culinary interests of the new owners. The dinner group I was out with shared a chicken and potato clay-pot curry (recommended), and though we didn't have it there was also a tofu and cabbage clay-pot curry that sounded real good.
No liquor license. Dinner for 6 with an appetizer (steamy dumplings, yum) came to $60 + tip, quite reasonable by any standards.
