Welcome to the Motor City the Armpit of the World!
Attractions:
Casino's - downtown casino's are all pretty cool. Not much else to do but gamble and eat in Greektown, which unfortunately is not that great.
Food - skip it and go to the suburbs (see below).
Entertainment - skip it and go to the suburbs (see below).
Sports - laughable. The fans a fickle and they like to drink and fight in the stands. Good if you're looking for a rowdy time. Bad if you have a date or family with you. Red Wing tickets are nearly impossible to get. That is the only sporting event worth going too.
Auto Show - Must see.
Canada - take the Via train (but only go first class) to Toronto. Great strip clubs and very inexpensive. Stop and get Canadian money first. Windsor is clean, small town. Residents are very nice.
Physical Appearance: This city is physically ugly. It is dirty. Not just a little dirty, but totally filthy. It looks like the entire city was covered in some kind of black rain or massive dust cloud that can never be washed off. Then there are huge skyscrapers that are totally abandoned. Get on the People Mover, downtown Detroit's little tramway. Though the ride was fun and cheap (50 cents), you will get a nice view of the central city. Included in this trip is a view of part of the city that looks like the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. Dead buildings with broken windows, etc. The only thing missing is the evil mutants running around trying to eat your brains.
Residents: The residents are not only rude, but also hostile. While walking in the famed Renaissance Building, some old lady who was not watching where she was going, nearly ran me over. You would think she would apologize. Not in D-E-T-R-O-I-T. She promptly yelled at me to "look out". Trying saying hello to someone there. The response I got back was an angry "humph" and people would then walk away, disturbed that someone would actually dare to just say give a passing hello. People will cut you off in traffic, they will come out of their cars to attack passing pedestrians for some slight, they all carry guns and knives. This is the unfriendliest city in the world. NYC does not compare because the residents there are rude but not vicious.
Attractiveness of Residents: Detroiters are very unattractive. I heard that Michigan had the fattest people in the USA. They must all be in Detroit. The women here are very plain. For some strange reason, Detroit seems to have a huge population of fat, foul mouthed, tattooed, masculine, women who do nothing all day but smoke cigarettes and complain.
Available Females: It is very difficult to find any single women over the age of 21. Most women over that age (especially the more attractive or nicer ones) are married or living with someone. There is a big emphasis here for women to marry early. Unfortunately for single men, the only thing that is left is the ones with something wrong with them. Like being nasty or bossy. They are all bossy too. I you land one, be prepared to be her slave and to be whipped. You would think that even plain women should do well here due to the lack of eligible females. However, please note ladies, that all the men here are interested in either just one-night stands or in dating college girls. Men in their late 30's have no interest in dating anyone over 25. If you are a lady near 30 or so, you will have to look at the over 45 crowd. One plus or minus, depending on your point of view, the women here are rather loose. I have bedded women who were living with their boyfriends.
Hot Spots for Single Women:
Royal Oak - northern suburb. See last sentence above. Here is the only place you will want to go to bed someone whom you really don't want to marry, etc. Lots of single adults, mostly 22 to 35 age range. A friend of mine once bedded 4 different women in 24 hours here. This is the place to go for one-night stands. The over 45 crowd should just go here for dinner. You won't do well here unless you have lots of money or are more attractive. There are a lot of bi-sexual women here. Most of these women are younger and very attractive. So if you are into that, go here.
Safety - stay away after nightfall. This city is very unsafe and the police force is undermanned and poorly motivated. They are too busy dealing with all the more serious crimes to deal with theft or robberies, etc.
Taxes - Detroit is one of the only cities in Michigan that will tax you for working there. Amazing but true. They charge you for coming to this dump and trying to make it better. Property taxes here are outrageous.
Government - there is none. The police are too busy chasing murders and armed robbers to bother with thefts, etc. The roads have pots holes in them that you can lose whole families in. Trucks carry gravel without proper safety precautions. I had 4 smashed windshields in 3 months on I-94.
Traffic - Traffic is terrible. Try to go anywhere at off times. The only place worse is the suburb, Troy. Be prepared for Chicago like traffic. The police are very poor about responding to accidents and the residents love to rubberneck. I think they enjoy the carnage. Michigan drivers with MI plates drive 10 to 20 mph the speed limit with impunity. Drivers are reckless due to no fault insurance required in the state. Old beat up cars park next to you at malls and regular vandalism in common.
Suburbs: (much safer)
Troy - Great mall if you are into shopping. Good business community. Not much else. Terrible traffic.
Royal Oak - Good restaurants and wide selection for such a small area. Parking is miserable. Best place in Detroit to take a date - whether hot chick or your wife, spouse etc. Liberal scene. Try the nightclub above Sangria. I have heard that Sunday nights are very cool.
Ann Arbor - Nice restaurants and wide selection. More upscale than Royal Oak. Residents are former hippies and overpaid yuppies. Residents are very rude and arrogant. The kid at the hardware store will have an attitude. I once had to stay here overnight at a hotel. The kid at the counter looked and acted like he just crawled down from the hills after a day of moonshining. However, in between his sucking his teeth, he put his nose in the air, he acted like he was doing me a great favor by charging me a lot of money to stay at his hotel. Everyone in Ann Arbor is "somebody". They are legends in their own minds. Besides the food scene, this is a dull city. You will hear how great it is for women, nightlife etc. Forget it! It is a lie. There are only a few college women running around and much more college and over-aged former college boys running around for the few eligible women there. Also, there is a big lesbian population in A2. These are the types that don't like men. Try Royal Oak if you like the attractive types of these ladies. The ones there are usually nicer too. They are not insulted if you come up and talk with them. Places to eat - Real Seafood Co., The Earl, Sweet Lorraine's.
Dearborn - nothing there but Arabic food.
Novi - nice mall. Good restaurants. Very small. Nice family type area. I would recommend Steve and Rockies, The Lazy Lizard, Mongolian BBQ.
Northville - A couple of good restaurants. Very, very small. Some horse racing. Family type area. Take your girlfriend to "Little Italy" restaurant - dressy and Rocky's. Good place to buy home and make some money later selling - but not as good as Plymouth.
Dexter - small, small town. Cousin's Heritage Inn - best of the gourmet places in the area.
Chelsea - Long ways away. Go to the Common Grill restaurant and take your best girl. Good small town America. Very clean and nice people.
Saline - Long ways away. Go to the Mac's Arcadian restaurant and take your best girl. Richer Ann Arborites live here. They can be snotty.
Plymouth - The best place to raise your family. Very upscale, beaver clever type area. Box Bar and Grill is great. Compari's is great. Nice shopping - very very small. Police are very strict. Government is corrupt. Good place to buy home and make some money later selling.
Ypsilanti - there is a Deja Vu and that is about it.
Canton - good selection of everything. Nice small city. Nice homes area. Just south of Plymouth.
Monroe - small, small - nothing there.
Southfield - just part of Detroit. Business building area. Some nice very upscale restaurants.
Airport - Terrible parking and expensive. Poor service. NWA rules here, need I say more?!
Other: Michigan in general is dumpy. For all the great golf courses and golf resorts - there are many. There is not much else coming here for. Yes, come for the golf up north. Stay out of the rest. Be prepared for the foul language here.
