The home of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame has
recently added an important ingredient.
A professional Hockey team - The Minnesota Wild.
Since 1992/1993 season, when the "Northstars" fled to
Dallas, Texas this hockey hotbed has been teamless.
No more !
We now have the Minnesota Wild !!
A new arena has been erected in St. Paul to accomodate
this welcomed addition to the local sports scene. The
XCel Energy Arena. It is a state of the art hockey house.
There isn't a bad sight-line in the house.
Plenty of parking and easy access to the main Highways.
It's a hockey lovers dream come true.
The fans are so excited to finally have a hockey team
to call their own that it's bordering on fanatical.
For the home opener tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers,
scalpers are reportedly getting $500.00 per ticket. (Face
value for the top tickets is $64.00) Quite a mark-up.
According to the local press, tickets for the game tonight
are the toughest to get since 1991. At that time, the HOT
ticket was for the Twins vs. Atlanta at the Metrodome in
the World Series match-up.
Another "wild" fact is that when the single tickets went on
sale - they were sold-out in less than two minutes !
The problem here (as with any other expansion franchise)
is getting off the ground. Trying to gather the right
blend of exciting, talented youngsters and inexpensive,
proven veterans. Hopefully, with the signing of some
"local" talent, the Wild will provide at least a
semi-competitive first year team.
They have drafted two local players (Darby Hickerson,
from Richfield, MN and Jeff Nielson, from Grand Rapids, MN)
Both are ex-college stars here. They will get one hell of hand
when they are introduced tonight.
So far the "Wild" has done exactly as expected of all
expansion franchises. They have lost their first two
road games and have been outscored by a 7 - 2 margin.
Ah, but there is always hope and maybe the miracle
of a home-opening win against a good, established
NHL team like the Flyers ?
If you are lucky enough to be at the arena tonight, you
will receive a commemorative hockey poster on the way in
and a commemorative Wild Wheaties box on the way out.
It may be a long season for the Wild, but it promises to
be an unforgettable one and I have a very strong feeling
that the second Presidential debate tonight will have to
take a back-seat as we prepare to witness local history.
Sorry gentlemen.
Hopefully - I will have a happy update to this tomorrow.
We're getting ready to go W I L D in Minnesota !!!!!
O.K. This is not the place for play-by-play but I will
tell you that the "Wild" and Philly game ended in a
3 - 3 tie. I was impressed by our new team, they were
in the game all the way. I think it's fitting that the
first ever goal scored in the Xcel Energy Arena was
by "homegrown" Darby Hickerson.
A very enjoyable evening in a great new arena !
THE "WILD" WIN, THE"WILD" WIND, THE "WILD" WIN !!!!!!!
Updated 10/19/00 for Historical Importance.
Last night, the Minnesota Wild won their first game
in franchise history by 6 - 5 score over the
Tampa Bay Lightening !!!
One down ? ? ? to go !
They always say the first is the toughest !
Go "WILD" ! (and Rangers too !)
