| Stloraine's Full Review: The Strip |
Tonight was a Las Vegas celebration typical of what the big hotel casinos have to offer. Free champagne, birthday cake and fifteen minutes of spectacular fireworks exploding high above the golf course of the Desert Inn Resort and Casino as it celebrated its 50th birthday.
The D.I. is one of the Strip's oldest casinos, having a variegated history including the Mob, the Feds and the respectable. Still, it has never lost its luxurious lustre despite repeated remodelings and changing owners. It has somehow managed to retain that opulent 50's atmosphere yet is comparable to the most modern hotels, offering gourmet dining and casino action.
The radio announced that the D.I. was going to celebrate its 50th birthday and there would be a fireworks display and cake and champagne. These are two of my most favorite things in life. I knew I had to go. If I were an Egyptian queen, I would hold nightly fireworks displays above the Nile every night of the week. And I can only extol the superb qualities of champagne. Vive le France. Whatever sins you have committed on this planet, your wondrous discovery will apologize for them all.
I have seen so many beautiful shows in Las Vegas, dined in so many superb gourmet rooms, met so many entertainers and stars, and even participated in the filming of television and movie productions. The Strip is a glitter, and the stars shine nightly.
The twenty-four hour seven day a week life style is so unique and so successful, that people are swarming here at a rate that is causing the natives to protest and ask for a halt. But the real estate crowd is making too much money, and the casinos grow as the population swells, so the migration will continue.
Streets are torn up over and over, widened until there is no space left, serpentine freeways are constructed at a maddening pace, and in the midst of thousands of acres of space,five-bedroom, two-story houses are packed side by side, the old half acre ranch homes with pool a thing of the past. The modern crowd is mostly retirees from the Midwest and they don't want to garden or swim, just gamble and eat buffets. Most of them don't bother to dress up at all, going everywhere in jogging shoes and sweats, grey haired, fat and old, pensioned and with nothing to do but while away their days as gourmands and gamblers.
I miss the glamorous, glittery people. Tonight at the Desert Inn, I saw a glimpse of the past, ladies in evening gowns and gentlemen in tuxedos. In the bright light of the fireworks exploding in the sky, I was transported back in time.
