I just returned today from a four day business and leisure trip to Vegas. Stayed at the MGM Grand courtesy of my company. Had an OK time there. I had not been to Las Vegas in years and on the first day I was there, I called my wife who had stayed behind in Seattle and told her we had to come back. There were so many new and amazing places she had to see. By last night when I called her before coming home today, I told her to forget it. I would never come back to Las Vegas again unless I had to for business.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the hotel. The MGM Grand is just fine as was the other hotels I walked through. Was very impressed with NY NY, thought Bellagio was beautiful, the Luxor was cool, Excalibur was the worst I went into. Reminded me of Fantasyland with slots.
But the really bad part that I did not notice the first day but it had made me totally sick by the last day was the smoking. I guess I have just gotten used to the fact that here in Washington, most places do not allow smoking. And most people who still smoke, are fairly polite about not spreading it around or taking it outdoors. But not in Vegas. Even though we were in a non-smoking room, my clothes smelled so badly of smoke, I was getting a headache just from wearing them. The conference rooms were non-smoking by order of my company, but everyone smoked just outside them, in the bathrooms, in elevators, and worst of all in the casino. And of c course you can't go anywhere in Las Vegas without going through the casino. Even if you are light gambler as I am, you still have to traverse it three or four times a day to get to meetings, or just go outside.
Now the good stuff. On the middle night we were there my company arranged a private showing of the Luxor's hot new show, The Blue Man Group. If you get a chance---SEE IT! It was hot. Some of the funniest comedy I have ever seen, some of the most innovative ideas, incredible effects and just plain fun. It is so hard to describe it, all I can say is WOW! Many in our group of 1200 did not like it. Most of them were over 50 (I am 47) and not used to going to the theater. Also most of them were also incredibly rude and went in and out to restrooms or elsewhere all through the show. Absolutely crass!
But if you are in Las Vegas, and you like to laugh, be surprised, see something truly different, see The Blue Man Group. One small drawback for me was the volume level but I am sure my kids (19 and 21) would have loved it.
