I went to Vegas for the first time a couple of months ago and it was more than I ever imagined. There is something for everyone, including a variety of family-oriented entertainment. A word to the wise, when looking for family entertainment, you're going to come across some other stuff as well (prostitution IS legal in some of the surrounding counties and they have no "open container" laws.)
I split my week between Circus Circus and Caesar's Palace. Though Caesar's is the clear winner for classy accomodations, both hotels have their highlights. Caesar's is much more adult oriented-- I saw only a small handful of children in three days. The casino crowd was upscale too- you will feel underdressed in jeans! Caesar's offers an amazing collection of designer (Donna Karen, Ralph Lauren, BCBG, etc) shops in their mall, the "Forum" and an unparalelled buffet of seafood, gourmet desserts, and friendly service. Caesar's offers a beautifully designed and decorated hotel and casino that will make you feel like Caligula (minus the vulgar stuff, of course.)
On the other hand Circus Circus offers a great place for families to stay. The lobby and casino have acrobats and tight-rope walkers. There is plenty of "kid" food-- McDonalds, pizza, etc. Also, there is a huge astrodome-type structure that is a mini-amusement park featuring a rollercoaster, cotton candy and plenty of fairway games (there is no extra charge for entering.) The rooms were clean and the staff was capable, but above and beyond that, the accomodations weren't anything spectacular.
All in all, if you want glitz and glamour go to Caesars-- it's situated close to all the swinging hotspots on the strip! If you want family fun for a good price, go to Circus Circus. Oh and if you're between the ages 18-30, go stay at the Hard Rock Hotel. It's not on the strip, but I saw enough movie stars in 12 hours so that I never have to sit through a 4-hour Oscar show again!!
