Based on a recent (and my first) trip to Las Vegas, I have created a Top Ten of my favorite hot spots of Vegas. Before I went to Las Vegas, I read a lot about the city and quite frankly, I became overwhelmed at all the possibilities. Maybe this list will help first-timers or anyone else with some suggestions on how to make the most of your Las Vegas trip.
10. Lion Habitat inside MGM Grand Casino (FREE ADMISSION)- What a pleasant surprise to find baby lion cubs and teenage lions roaming around inside the MGM Grand Casino. Ok, well they aren't exactly IN the casino, but rather behind glass walls. You can be sitting at a nickel slot machine while watching lion tamers feed the "baby" felines. It's quite a contrast. You can even walk through the habitat via a glass tunnel and have the lions all around you. Worth checking out if you are in MGM Main Casino (located near the Rainforest Cafe).
9. Watching Bellagio's Million Dollar Fountain Show from Paris' Eiffel Tower Observation Deck ($8.00 per person to visit the Eiffel Tower observation deck)- This is among the best views you will get of the strip with the exception of the Stratosphere. Not only is the view fabulous but if you time it right, you can see Bellagio's famous fountain show perfectly from right across the street. Excellent during the day OR night.
8. Pirate Ship Battle at Treasure Island (FREE ADMISSION) - This show has great special effects and it's free. The fact that it is over almost before it begins and extremely crowded during show times almost overwhelms the positives. I still think the Pirate Battle is worth seeing if you happen by Treasure Island right before showtime and can manage to squeeze into the crowd.
7. Caesar's Palace Forum Shops (FREE ADMISSION unless you shop or eat inside) - An incredibly lavish shopping and dining area that can be accessed from inside the Caesar's Palace casino or outside from the Strip. The setting in the Forum Shops is very Roman, heavy in marble and has a special ceiling effect of the setting sun. It really is visually beautiful and features upper class establishments such as Versace and Spago.
6. Caesar's Palace Casino (FREE ADMISSION) - While all the Casinos are similar in game selections, it is the atmosphere and decor that makes each Casino stand out - for the good or the bad. At Caesar's, it's very good. The huge statues of Roman history combined with beautiful Greek architecture is clean, cold and impressive. Just like you would expect to find in old day Rome. Imagine yourself in a big, beautiful Toga party.
5. Venetian Casino (FREE ADMISSION) - As one of Las Vegas' newest hotels and casinos, Venetian pulls out all the stops in elegance. Every angle of this building is impressive and looks even better at night. Made as a replica of landmarks in Venice, Italy, this hotel is breathtaking and quite large in size. Inside the casino you will find slots and high-limit poker rooms. But what you are more likely to notice is the rich, gold decor of a Venetian palace.
4. Stratosphere and The Big Shot ($6 for observation deck admission, Big Shot ride extra)- Stratosphere is the highest point in Las Vegas. The view is incredible - day or night. There isn't much you can say about this attraction except to go and bring your camera. The Big Shot is a heart-stopping ride on the top of the Stratosphere (there is also a roller-coaster on the outside edge of the Stratosphere observation deck). Ride it and enjoy the view, if you can keep your eyes open.
3. Luxor Casino (FREE ADMISSION) - While probably one of the most recognizable casinos in Las Vegas, it is also among the best. When you follow the giant Sphinx into the glassy black pyramid, you feel like an ant inside Egypt. You are surrounded by enormous Egyptian statues and the world's largest atrium. While the casino seems more dimly lit than the others, the Luxor feels intimate and inviting.
2. Emeril's New Orleans Fish House (Expensive prices but TRULY worth it) - This is the best meal I have ever had - PERIOD. As a fan of Emeril for the past two years, I was really excited to finally taste his 'kicked up' food and experience what is said to be the best wait staff in the country. The excellence shows in every detail. Even though this restaurant sounds like a seafood must, I had the steak and potatoes and I never regretted passing over the lobster. The popular barbeque shrimp appetizer was so delicious and the wine list was literally a book of selections. I never knew food could have so many flavor layers, everything was absolutely incredible. I know it might sound strange to have a restaurant in a Top Ten attractions list, but you must go here. Emeril's New Orleans Fish House is located in the MGM Grand Hotel. Go and treat yourself - I promise you will thank me later.
1. New York, New York Casino (FREE ADMISSION) - This hotel and casino is the most visually appealing, (both on the inside and the outside) on the Vegas Strip. The NY NY Casino looks like a movie set. Representing Times Square, Wall Street and Greenwich Village inside and the New York skyline, Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty on the outside, this hotel is a huge attraction in itself. The guest rooms are actually in the buildings which make up the New York skyline. The Casino seems very busy -both with tourists and neon-light eye-candy. Did I mention the roller coaster which winds around the hotel and into the casino? New York, New York should definitely be a must-see on your Vegas trip.
