Viva Las Vegas! Where else in the world will you get to see such an almost revolting display of wealth and glamour with their total disregard for conserving energy and their monolithic hotels with stunning special features? Where else can you claim to visit Paris, New York, Italy and Venice all in the same day? Or what about watching a volcano erupt, witness a spectacular ship battle, or watch statues tell a tale of Atlantis? This is over indulgence at it best. You don't need to want to gamble to go to Vegas. A great proportion of its visitors do not gamble. There is lots to do and see without gambling but slot machines and card tables are everywhere. Even the supermarkets have slot or card betting machines. Unless you hate to gamble or play slots, you will most likely leave Vegas with less change in your pockets.
Las Vegas or "lost wages" is a great vacation destination for singles or couples or even families. Virtually everything is cheap compared to vacationing elsewhere. Food, lodging and souvenirs are in abundance and quite cheap. You can expect to spend less than $100 a day including lodging if you budget yourself well. Meals can be had for $8 or less, lodging can be as low as $50 for older hotels even on the strip during off peak times. Basically, Vegas wants you to use all your savings on gambling. Even the relatively newer hotels costs less than $100 from Sundays to Thursday on off peak times. You can't expect to stay at an equivalent quality hotel elsewhere without touching at least $150. I suggest staying at an older hotel on the Strip so that everywhere is within walking distance and you save money. You can opt to stay at other hotels not on the Strip for less and they do have shuttles to the Strip. Vegas is also a good destination for families as a number of hotels (eg. MGM Grand, NY NY, Circus Circus, etc) has amusement parks or rides for kids.
And, don't forget the shows! Vegas promotes some of the best acts and performers in the world. Periodically you can catch your favorite performers. You'll need to check with the hotels or the net. I believe upcoming performers include Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Besides singers, there are special acts such as Siegfried and Roy with their albino tigers, Radio City Rockettes, and David Cassidy to name a few.
Food is everywhere in Vegas. After all, they want you to be full and content when gambling. There are a lot of buffets, fast foods and regular sit down dining restaurants. Rio hotel boasts a fast food plaza of international dishes. I was almost spoiled by having great tasting prime rib with all the trimmings every day for $5.
I spent about 3 or 4 days in Vegas and pretty much saw all the biggest hotels and attractions. I don't suggest spending too many days in Vegas as you may end up spending more money on gambling as the temptation to play slots or bet are great.
The only thing I dislike about Vegas is that it can become a bit depressing when you realize that some people visit Vegas in hopes of winning the jackpot and escape from the realities of their everyday life. I was once depressed to see on one of the hotel's billboards a sign that says "We cash paychecks". When it becomes that obvious that local residents cash their paychecks to curb their gambling habits, it hits me hard. But enough of such a depressing thought.
I would recommend Las Vegas as a great cheap destination. Most times you can get great deals with flights and hotel packages. I would suggest visiting Vegas around mid September when it's not as hot. As Vegas is a desert, the heat is dry and even if you go in the summer, you can feel cool under a shade. Besides, all the hotels are air conditioned so heat really isn't such a big deal.
