| ifif1938's Full Review: Las Vegas |
When I was first invited to participate in this write-off, I wasn't sure I could stand up to the "pressure"....There are just too many really good writers here at epinions, how could my review stand up to the everyone else's? But, I assured myself, everyone must have felt the same way , especially, about their "First Time". And, this was to be a write-off in my favorite category, Travel where I feel most comfortable, so I decided to bite the bullet and jump right in.
Next, the challenge was to pick a favorite American city. I have about five U.S. cities I really love, Seattle, San Francisco, Boston, New York and Las Vegas. Since I haven't been to the first three in a few years I decided to forego writing about them, even though they are fantastic, fun-filled and extremely wonderful places, all in their own unique ways. Not having been there for a while though, my memories wouldn't be fresh.
I spent my childhood in New York and have returned many times since, I even lived in Manhattan for a year, a long time ago, and love the hustle, bustle and excitement, even the sounds of the city. Sometimes, when I hear the words of Barry Manilow's song, "New York City Rhythms", I think, hmmm, did he write this about me? Then, the lyrics really get to me and I feel the need for a New York fix. I want to visit the museums, see a few Broadway shows, the best shows anywhere in the world, after all, this isBroadway! I want to feel my pace quicken as I join the multitudes in the streets. I want to feel that New York City Rhythm in my soul. Yes, the excitement, the vibrations, the rhythm of New York, but , since I haven't been there in three years and places change so much, especially from what I have read about New York, I felt I wasn't qualified to write about that favorite of mine either.
Which leaves, " Las Vegas".....Viva Las Vegas! Nowhere else on earth is there another place quite like it, And, nowhere else are the hotels like the ones in this city. Wherever you look, in whichever direction you look, the sights astound. You can go around the world in just a few days..
Paris, ahh, Paris, the new Paris Hotel is outstanding, go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, walk on an old cobblestone Parisian street, shop, eat and just imagine yourself doing all that in the real city of Paris. It's not too hard to imagine.
Or, in the mood for someplace "a little different"? Just a short walk away, take a Venetian gondola ride, walk around San Marco Square, minus the pigeons. Or, visit Caesar in his palace. The mummy's in the tombs at Luxor. See a medieval joust in the Excalibor and dine with King Arthur. Be a part of a Carnival in Rio. Want more? There is more... a lot more, there's Monte Carlo, with its glitter and elegance. There's the Northern lakes of Italy at the Bellagio, with it's magical, musical water show, the pirates at treasure island, and the piece de resistance, New York, New York, another spectacular sight, with its replica of the Statue of Liberty, in it's own mini harbor, the Manhattan skyline and running on top of it all, a mammoth rollercoaster, reminisent of the one in Coney Island near where I grew up.
I've been lucky enough to take many trips to this city in the desert, quite a few times over the years and have seen many changes take place. Many years back, when the Natural food industry was just beginning to boom, we would attend conventions every other year there that were held by the National Nutritional Foods Association. We wanted to stay abreast of all the new products, nutritional supplements and new food items coming out on the market. Products that would keep us healthier, make us look better, and most important, live longer! It was all here, in the largest convention center in the world.. What a varied selection of things there were and the people!! We saw some very strange and funny things during that time, one that comes to mind were some exhibitors, dressed all in white, like Yogi's, wearing turbans wrapped around their heads, looking very spiritual, selling Vitamins,Yogi tea, Bliss bars, incense, whatever was in vogue at the time, then, we'd spot them late at night, at the craps table, shooting 7's and 11's, yelling and screaming their turban's off...
Now that those years have passed, we go there primarily just for pleasure, to spend a few days on our way to Los Angeles, to visit family and friends. It makes a great stopping off point for us. A chance to just goof off, gamble a little , sometimes, even win a little money, or, leave some behind! Indulge in some terrific meals in the newest, gourmet restaurants that are opening almost daily by some of the worlds greatest chefs, go to some of the most incredible buffets, with enough food that would probably feed a whole country with what's left over at the end of the day.
And the shows, do you like magic? Well, this is the place for you. Do you like unique, well, this is the place for you ,do you like Topless, Spectacular, Music, Comedy, There is something for everyone in Las Vegas.
One more thing, I don't want to forget, there are other things to do and see besides the glitter, gambling and eating. If you are in the mood for something more in the realm of nature or natural beauty, just a short ride out of town, in many directions, are places to ski, hike or just drive through, to gawk at the sights that surrounds the city. Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire State Park are natural wonders that astound your eyes and senses, just look at the colors carved into the layers of rock, in every direction, when the sun is shining, and it almost always is... A trip to Lake Mead yes, you can even go sailing, and Hoover Dam is a must, if you haven't seen it already, to marvel at the amazing ingenuity and engineering of so many, to harness the power of the Colorado River for all those living in this desert. It really is mind boggling.. If you wish, you can even take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. As I said, there really is no limit to what is available for your enjoyment or taste. Or your budget!
So, there you have it, my favorite, fun city, Las Vegas, in a few days, you can do and see almost anything you'd like, and for me, I can get even a little taste of my true love, my favorite city in the world, Paris, now, that they have replicated it with the Eiffel Tower as it's crowning achievement, standing proud under the desert sun.
Since this is part of a write-off. I'd like to invite you read the favorite cities reviews of the other participants, all of which, I 'm looking forward to reading...They are, in no particular order:
