Delicious pancakes, crispy waffles covered with real maple syrup made before your very eyes and served hot off the grill. In Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, near Franconia Notch, there is a gem of a restaurant called Polly's Pancake Parlor.
As you can guess from their name, Polly's specializes in pancakes. They fix them right on the grill overlooking the gallery of tables. The pancakes are small in size, but this can let you try their sampler of different flavored pancakes; walnut, blueberry, banana, etc.
They use 100% pure maple syrup and also put out on the table a whole variety of maple products; maple sugar for the coffee, maple spread to put on your toast. I personally can't get enough of their maple spread, which in texture is a bit like crystalized honey, and tastes just like the maple syrup. I bought a 1 pound jar of the stuff and ate it by the spoonful while studying for finals. I suppose it is fitting that Polly's is in a place called Sugar Hill.
One cannot survive on pancakes (and waffles) alone, and so Polly's also has wonderful sausage and biscuits to round out your all-day, high cholestoral breakfast.
As if the food were not enough, Polly's is situated on a sloping hill with a fantastic view of Franconia Notch. The restaurant is a charming, pre-franchise America kind of place run by several generations of a single family. The walls are covered with photos from their vacations in the winter months when the shutter up the shop and head south.
Meals are reasonably priced. I don't recall spending more than about $8 per person and leaving the restaurant absolutely stuffed. My mom and I discovered this restaurant purely by chance one Colombus Day weekend in 1995 and have made going there a center-piece of every trick back to Northern New Hampshire since then.
I just did a search on Google, and from some New Hampshire tourist site, I copied the following information about Polly's:
Polly's Pancake Parlor, Rte. 117, Sugar Hill. 603-823-5575. Open Mother's Day to mid-October Monday-Friday 7-3, Saturday-Sunday 7-7. $.
That's right. They are only open half the year. The owners go on vacation to warmer places like Mexico and Peru.
