The mountain region of Northwest New Jersey is dotted with lakes and farms. It's an area that has maintained its natural beauty despite the exponential growth that has occurred over the past two decades. With the rising price of land, Dairy farms have been replaced by Horse farms, but local zoning restrictions have kept many of the old homesteads intact. Route 80 makes Sussex County extremely accessible to NYC...a fifty minute ride to the George Washington Bridge.
Lake Hopatcong is New Jersey's largest fresh water lake and nearby Lake Mohawk is the largest manmade lake in the state. Dozens of smaller lakes, like Cranberry and Lackawanna also dot the area. The Village of Lake Mohawk is particularly beautiful. It's an Alpine Village located at the base of eight mile long Lake Mohawk.
For Outdoor enthusiasts, the area is a haven. Stokes Memorial Forest and Alamuchy State Park are just ten minutes away by car. The Vernon Valley/Great Gorge Ski resort is only fifteen minutes away, on the border between Sussex County, New Jersey and Orange County, New York. This is one of the most breathtaking areas in New Jersey.
The area has numerous small hotels, motels and Bed & Breakfasts. There are a good number of decent restaurants in the area as well. Nearby Jefferson township (a ten minute ride) boasts The New Orleans Steak House (great food at great prices), Frank's (Authentic Italian cuisine...the guy travels in from Bay Ridge Brooklyn every day - no kidding!) and The Thirsty Moose (Huge portions, moderate prices). Sussex has The Front Porch (excellent), The Station House and Krogh's. For longer stays, though there aren't many, the occasional lakefront Summer rental can be found.
