Jackalope Pottery: Not your father's terra cotta

Pros:Enormous selection, great prices, diverse stock

Cons:It might take several hours to wander through!

You want some good pot? There's really only one place to get it: Jackalope Pottery in Santa Fe.

You can wander a few acres of pottery, crafts, foods, jewelry, furniture, sculpture, native foods, imported stuff of all kinds, sort of like Epcot Center if it were made of terra cotta and adobe. The goods come from Mexico, Tibet, India, China ... well, just draw a big circle around a map of the world, and it comes from there. The pottery is top quality, utilitarian and downright diverse! You can find indoor and outdoor pots, big and small, even fountains and terra cotta hearths for the backyard.

There's plenty of parking at Jackalope (2820 Cerrillos Road, 471-8539)and a cafe where you can get some authentic New Mexican lunch. Often, you can watch various artisans do their magic. Clerks circulate constantly, but are never in your face. This is a leisurely place to shop, and odds are you'll find something you've never seen before. If you have decorated in Southwestern or Spanish style, you cannot pass up Jackalope, a Santa Fe institution for years. (In the fall, hang out at Jackalope to smell the fresh chiles roasting on an open roaster. It's heaven!)

Best of all, the prices at Jackalope are better than reasonable. They're downright cheap on so many of the items you start looking to dump your luggage so you can fit just one more pot in the trunk!
