Rinconcito Peruano is another one of the wonderful restaurants on Ninth Avenue in Manhattan that can instantly transport you to another corner of the globe. This place is inexpensive, simple and the food is delicious. Do not expect a tablecloth or formal service. In fact, there are about a dozen formica tables and just one waitress. There is little in the way of decoration.
Head to Rinconcito Peruano for the food and budget prices, especially by New York City standards. I recommend starting with Papa a la Huancaina ($5.00). This dish consists of thinly sliced potatoes (Peru is very proud of being the home of the ancestor to the Idaho potato) covered in a thin, creamy cheese sauce. At first, the dish does not look very appealing with its pale colors. However, the taste is a magical mix of spicy pepper flavors and rich cheese flavors. The Tamal (aka Tamale - $3.50) is soft with a heavy roasted corn flavor.
The entrees are almost all meat or seafood. Try the Lomo Saltado ($7.50) and you will not be disappointed. You will be treated to a heaping plate of strips of beef flavored with tomatoes, onions and cilantro served over French fries. The vinegar based sauce makes the fries a little soggy, but incredibly delicious. Bisteck a la Chorrillana ($8.00) or Pescado a la Chorrillana ($9.50) is basically the same preparation with a thin steak or piece of fish, instead of chunks, served with a fried potato.
Most dishes on the menu involve onions, cilantro and tomatoes. So, there is not much in the way of variety. Luckily, everything that I have eaten here has been great.
Rinconcito Peruano also offers a few special drinks that are worth trying. Chica Morada ($1.50 a glass) is a purple, sweet, corn drink that is really tasty. You will notice a slight, almost fermented, corn taste. If you are in the mood for a very sweet drink order a Vaso de Cebada ($1.00). You will be served a cold glass of barley juice. This drink has a light roasted flavor and it is sweet enough to be a dessert.
Desserts include Rice Pudding ($2.00) that is mild a very smooth. Or, you can try an Alfajor ($1.50). This is a small pastry, with a crumbly, thin layer of cake on the outside and Dulce de Leche (a caramel-like substance made from boiling down milk) on the inside.
I really enjoy eating at Rinconcito Peruano when I am in the mood for something a little different. This a nice and simple place.
Rinconcito Peruano is located at 803 Ninth Avenue (between 53rd and 54th Streets) in Manhattan, NY. Their telephone number is (212) 333-5685.
