Old San Juan is probably my favorite place to have lunch these days. It is a simple Puerto Rican (and Argentine)restaurant with low prices. The decor is straight forward and the waiters basically take your order and bring water when you ask for a refill. On the other hand, everybody is quite friendly. So, I guess what I am saying is, for a enjoyable and quick lunch head on over.
The lunch specials are $6.45 and they come with rice and beans. You have a choice of red or black beans and white or yellow rice. The beans are rich and delicious with just enough sauce to pour over the rice.
Okay, now for the food... There are 6 or 7 lunch specials each day. Pernil (roast leg of pork) is always one of them. The meat is a bit chewy with a slight garlic flavor. The outside pieces are nice and crispy. The portion is more than enough for me to eat at lunch.
On Wednesdays the specials include Pork Chops with Sauce. The chops are medium thickness and very tender. They are served over a peppery, somewhat garlicky red sauce. Once again, the dish is relatively straight forward and really enjoyable. The only problem is that, unlike the Pernil, pork chops only appear one day a week.
There are also some Argentine items on the menu as well. The two Empanadas served with a salad are excellent. The ground beef is juiced and combined with hard boiled eggs and raisins.
You can also order the Churrasquito (Argentine steak) with French Fries, Salad and rice & beans for $7.95. The steak was tender, juicy and too big to finish. Pour some garlic filled Chimi Churi (marinade) over the steak to jazz it up.
The only lunch special that did not make the grade was the Costilla Asada (barbequed spare ribs) since they were not very meaty. Stick to the Pernil!
There are two Old San Juan locations:
765 Ninth Ave, between 51st & 52nd Streets (212) 262-7013
and
462 2nd Ave., at the corner of 26th Street (212) 779-9360
