The Museum of Modern Art is going to close soon, so you better make plans to go soon, or you may have to wait for a few years to see it!
The Museum will soon undertake a massive renovation and expansion which will almost double the size of the exhibition space in the museum, and during that time the museum will shut down and most of the exhibits will be held elsewhere including other parts of New York such as Queens.
I recently visited MOMA on a Monday evening for a special program called Mondays at MOMA which is a guided tour of a temporary exhibit followed by a wine tasting. The exhibit on that night I was there was by Andreas Gursky a German Photographer who was having a midcareer retrospective. The tour-guide had a lot of information, and was kind enough to answer any questions from the group.
The photographs displayed were really something to see, Gurskey is very interested in lines, as well as people, so while some pictures seem to be focused on just a place or setting such as a building, others include Photos taken of huge rock concerts where there must be over a thousand people in the huge print, and everyone seems to be in focus. I had never seen photography so clear, and with so many different objects being in focus at the same time.
After the tour of the exhibit came the wine tasting, and since Gurskey is German, the theme for the wine tasting was German wine. There was also cheeses and fruit to accompany the cheese. Overall it was a very pleasent evening.
MOMA is also a great museum to explore on your own, without a tour, there is so much to see, and I am not looking forward to the closing which will take place sometime this year.
