Look...Times Square! Where?

Written: Jun 19 '07 (Updated Jun 27 '07)
Pros:The lights, people, shopping, and entertainment.
Cons:Didn't even know I was there at first
The Bottom Line: Times Square is an amazing experience.

The title is the start of a conversation my sister and I had.
Sister: "Look...Times Square!"
Me: "Where?"
Sister: "You're standing in it."
Me: "Huh?"

Not real intelligent, I know. I just couldn't figure out how she knew we were standing in Times Square. It looked like other streets we had been on during our travels in New York City. Ahhhhhh...there's the street sign that proclaims I am standing on the corner of Times Square and Broadway. Now I get it. It's not so much the place, as the feeling.

Feeling Times Square
The bustle of thousands of people, lights as far as the eye can see, shopping, and entertainment make up Times Square.

People from all across the world come to Times Square. During our time there we met a German couple, another couple from Spain, and a group of women from Italy. The multitude of languages spoken in any one area of Times Square can boggle the mind. Still, where else can you go and have that many countries represented with everyone getting along?

Lights up high, lights down low, lights as far as the eye can see. Blue lights, yellow lights, every color of the rainbow lights. The spectacle that is Times Square after nightfall is an eye feast. Scrolling, flashing, waving lights make up 100's, if not 1000's, of signs to draw you into a place to spend your money.

The variety of places to spend your money will have you reaching for your cash, checks, and credit cards. A few of the stores I visited; Virgin Megastore, M&M's Store, Hershey's, Planet Hollywood, oops.. a gentleman's club (no, my sister and I didn't stay). Yes, there are clubs for men, but my sister and I were able to find a place for us. 2 for 1 drinks for women and NYC firemen to entertain us. Too bad my mind didn't register the name of the place, just the pictures of the firemen below it. Anyway...

The entertainment opportunities are vast and varied. Most notable is Broadway Theater. Big name stars and shows are a draw that is almost irresistible. Yet, I resisted. There is so much to see in NYC that I didn't want to spend 3 hours of my time sitting still. Movie theaters show the latest releases, concerts with the hippest now bands, and stand up comedians are other options available...as are the clubs mentioned above.

The Feeling
Bustling people from all around the world getting along and helping each other out bring a feeling of camaraderie. The lights of Times Square bring an otherworldy feeling. So many colors and designs, yet they all come together in a unique way. Shops, shops, and more shops bring the feeling that everything and anything is available. You may have to hunt for it, but that's half the fun. The entertainment feeling is an amazing one. Two small town women seeing big name stars that we thought we would never see anywhere except on the big screen or tv. We watched as two of the biggest names in the world, right or wrong, entered a Broadway play. Who were they? Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Put all those "feelings" together and what you get when you visit Times Square is an amazing experience.

But...
The only thing that bothered me about Times Square is I expected some kind of acknowledgement other than a regular street sign to tell me I was there. I don't know what I expected...maybe fireworks and a marching band to show me that I was standing in the world famous Times Square. That is my problem...but for me it was a problem.
