Review Topic: Sights & Attractions
In light of the recent events that have affected all of us, I believe that I needed to update a previous review on New York City. Our city might have been tarnished, however, we have not and will not allow these events to destroy our city. New York City is and has always been a great place to visit. There is so much to see and do in our City and I would love to take you on a little tour of one of the areas.
I have lived in New York City for my entire life and have seen many changes over the years in our city. One of the biggest changes that stands out above the rest is the redevelopment of Times Square.
Several years ago parts of Times Square was an area loaded with porno movies houses, electronic rip-off stores, drunks and dirt. Today that is gone. This is an area that must be seen and see what real urban renewal looks like. While many areas in New York have undergone many positive changes, I am limiting this review to Times Square and its surrounding area.
Firstly, there is no clear definition as to what are the boundaries of Times Square. However from a tourists’ point of view it should be looked at as the area from 41st Street to 50th Street from 6th to 8th Ave.
Most of the "must see's" are located between 42nd and 50th along both Broadway and 7th Avenue. Now let’s go for a walk!!!…
If you would start your walking tour on 42 St. and Broadway and head towards the higher street numbers you are sure to see it all! The first thing you will see is #1 Times Square, "the building where the ball comes down on New Years Eve." Stand outside this building and you can catch all the news headlines in a matter of minutes as it circles the building. Continue walking north and you will come across many more well known attractions. ESPN, the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, ABC's Good Morning America, MTV, Virgin Records, WWF, the biggest Marriott Hotel I have ever seen, and above all the biggest and brightest bill boards second only (maybe) to Las Vegas. This now brings up a tourist highlight. Times Square should be visited at least twice, once during the day and once in the evening to really appreciate the glitter of this area. Make sure you stop by the Times Square Visitors Center on Broadway at 47th Street. If you are interested in 1/2 price tickets to a Broadway show, stop by the TKTS booth on Broadway and 47th Street. Tickets are available on a first come first served basis on the day of the show.
During your day trip I suggest you walk north on 7th Ave to 50th Street and make a right turn and proceed one block to Radio City Music Hall and 1/2 block further, NBC Studios, and Rockefeller Center. (Yep that is where the big Christmas tree is.) Whatever you do DO NOT miss Rockefeller Center during Christmas time! It will be extremely crowded, but it is worth the fighting the crowds especially after dark! As a New Yorker this is one place we always go during the holiday season. The Christmas decorations are simply amazing. Make sure you take a peek at the ice skaters skating around the rink. Walk towards 5 Avenue (in the direction away from the Tree) and on your left you will see St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
A bit of advice...The subways are a great way to get around HOWEVER, try to avoid them during rush hour 4:00PM-7:00PM. People do use them to commute home from work and it could get really crowded. But make sure you use the "discounted Metro Card" when using the subways or buses. You can really save quite a bit of money. Stop by any subway booth and pick up a brochure explaining the different types of discounts. They range from a from a $4.00 Fun Pass to a $17.00 unlimited weekly pass. If you plan on staying even longer there are several other options that are available. You can even use a credit or debit card at the Metro Card Vending machines located in most Subway Stations. I have written a separate review on how to get around NYC the cheap way.
But whatever you do, I hope you enjoy our city! I love it and I know you will too!
