You can't believe it at first;
It's all happening so fast. Your head spins
As you try to make sense of the world around you.
You think you're imagining a movie;
Or maybe it's a dream, or anything but what it is.
Anything but this...anyplace but here.
But it is here, and the reality sinks in.
By choice, by fate...it doesn't matter.
Your world is crumbling; what was once so strong
Is now falling to pieces before you.
You think you can't go on; that there's nothing left.
You begin to mourn...and then to heal.
People around you: friends, family, and strangers
Are there to lift you up; to keep you going.
And then, slowly, the wound heals.
It's like a scar, a reminder of what was
And what still is.
I was going to write a slightly lighter opinion tonight, but in light of the day's tragic events, I felt this was only necessary. This was a day of horror, a day of sorrow, and a day of loss: loss that cannot be replaced in a day or a month. However, given time, I feel that we as a nation can grow closer and unify to become stronger.
The attacks on America were obviously pre-planned. Within 20 minutes of each other, two commercial airliners crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, one in each tower. The planes, which were both on transcontinental flights from Boston to Los Angeles (and consequently loaded with jet fuel) were hijacked and taken on a kamikaze mission with all passengers aboard. Then a third plane, also commercial, crashed into the Pentagon, and a fourth appeared to be on its way to either the White House or Camp David before the plane mysteriously crashed outside of Pittsburgh.
While it cannot be said with certainty who orchestrated these attacks, America must call upon its government to provide it with swift, fair punishment for all those involved. Be it a tactical nuclear strike or a military extraction operation, something must be done in retaliation for this act of war, and it must be done soon.
I say this in part because I myself have felt the effects of this tragedy in a very real way. None of my family or friends were involved in the catastrophe, but one of my closest friends could have been if the situation were a bit different. You see, she was visiting New York City just a week ago; in fact, she toured both towers and went shopping within a few blocks of the WTC. I can only imagine how I'd feel if I lost her to this heinous crime.
This is a time of crisis for our country, but it is the crisis that draws us to each other for support and will help us remain strong.
