I have searched Manhattan for the best French Toast for years. I have one favorite. Paris Commune makes a relatively traditional French Toast, using thick baguette slices. It is slightly crispy and chewy on the outside. The inside is rich and soft. You have to try it to see what joy French Toast can bring to one's morning. Each order is three slices of bread. You can taste the tremendous amount of butter that they pan fry the toast in. That is what makes it so good.
The French Toast with fresh fruit (usually banana, apples and strawberries) is $7.95.
The restaurant is rather small, but cozy. The exposed bricks and pressed tin ceiling are quaint. The plain wooden tables are placed fairly close together. They do allow smoking, which really is terrible, although I have almost never noticed it very much. It is just the idea that it is even allowed that makes me angry.
There can be lines on weekends. You should be okay if you are there by 10:30am. After that expect to stand around waiting for a few minutes.
The staff is friendly, if a little rushed. The coffee is definitely not my favorite.
I cannot impress upon you strongly enough how delicious the French Toast is! Go to Paris Commune and try it for yourself. The restaurant is located at 411 Bleecker Street (between Bank and West 11th Streets).
A few other French Toast picks are Trattoria del Arte on the corner of 57th St. and 7th Ave. where they make an incredibly sweet version out of panetone. Try it with the marscapone that they serve for instant heart failure.
Danal (90 E. 10th St. between 3rd and 4th Aves.) makes an interesting French Toast using croissants. While I like it, I can rarely get in the mood to eat something that rich.
Normas’s (118 W. 57th St., between 6th and 7th Avenues) is an amazing breakfast place in the Parker Meridien Hotel. Try their Fruit Basket French Toast. A hollowed out brioche is filled to the rim with berries. The overall taste is a little tart, but maple syrup turns this messy French Toast into a treat.
So, those are a few of my favorite French Toast spots. If you need more suggestions, just e-mail me.
