We moved recently from the San Francisco Bay Area to Cincinnati. Among other concerns of making the transition was finding good Chinese restaurants here ... both my wife & I like good Chinese food once in a while.
If we had any concerns, they were quickly put at ease. From all-you-can-eat buffets to trendy late-night places, Cincinnati has them all. Here's a brief description of some of our favorites:
Shanghai Mama's: Downtown's trendy late-night spot
216 E. Sixth St.
Cincinnati,OH
For big-city folks who like their restaurants open late and trendy, with a somewhat adventurous menu and a cool crowd this is the place. This is not your typical Chinese place: how about homemade flatbread topped with Szechuan chicken? Or go for a big bowl of noodle soup - from Spicy Chicken to Zen Vegetarian. The evening we went there they even had the "noodle-boy" demonstrate how he makes his flat noodles. Good fun, good food for about $12 per head.
Gourmet Buffet: Quantity and quality
4953 Houston Rd.
Florence,KY
I love Chinese buffets and I take the "all-you-can-eat" part quite seriously. This is one of the few places where the focus just isn't on quantity: the Gen.Tso's chicken and sesame chicken are outstanding, so are the fried shrimp, pepper chicken, and other items too numerous to mention. They also have fresh "Mongolian BBQ" as part of the buffet: pile up the meats and veggies you like on a plate and it will be cooked on a large skillet right before your eyes. Dessert selection not bad either. For about $6, this is one heck of a value!
New Wok: Quick, fresh, delicious take-out
Turfway Rd. & Hwy.18 (East of I-71)
Florence,KY
Located in a strip mall off the busy I-71, this tiny place looks unremarkable and the name is not exactly overly creative either, but food is fresh and good. There is a tiny seating area as well, but I prefer takeout. The Hunan vegetables and the shrimp and vegetables are outstanding. Your order usually gets ready in 10-15 min. So next time you're not upto cooking, try this place: and for $6-$8, it's affordable too!
Grand China: Your friendly neighborhood Chinese restaurant
6211 Glenway Ave.
Cincinnati,OH
Most diners here are local or tired shoppers from nearby Western Hills Shopping Center. No matter who you are, you will get a warm welcome and cheerful service. The most memorable dish here is the butterfly shrimp: giant shrimp are butterflied and fried, topped with brown sauce and veggies. Hunan vegetables not bad either. The hot & sour soup is more like sweet & sour but I like it that way, though my wife didn't. Prices are reasonable: you're not likely to exceed $8-$9 per head.
