Where the Wind Goes Sweeping Through the Plains

Written: Jun 13 '01
Pros:Lots of things to do
Cons:Hot in summer, windy
The Bottom Line: Great place to take your family for a vacation.

My grandparents live in Edmond, a suburb of Oklahoma City. Every year we spend two weeks of our summer vacation with them. We have been entertained for successive years by what Oklahoma City has to offer.

The area boasts plenty of shopping, educational entertainment and museums, a zoo, Frontier City, and Remington Park.

There are several malls including Quail Springs mall which has only three levels, but a variety of stores including Walden Books, JC Pennys, Sears, Dillards, Ambercrombie and Finch, and various other stores, it also boasts a movie theater (stadium seating of course) and a food court. Nearby to the mall is a Hobby Lobby, Micheals, Target, Toys R Us, a Barnes and Nobles, and an Old Navy. There is also Penn Square Mall and various other shopping centers throughout the Metropolitan area.

For educational entertainment for the children, there is the Kirkpatrick Center that allows for a hands on educational experience with an Imax theater as well. It explores the nature of flight with several airplanes, and early space crafts. It has a section of the Berlin wall, dresses worn by the first ladies, it has a garden and activities for learning about the nature of plants and weather. There is also a Native American section. It will entertain for an afternoon. There is also the Cowboy Hall of Fame, Enterprise Square where children can learn the basis of our economy, as well as several other noteworthy museums. There is also a Zoo that has a wide variety of animals for your children's enjoyment. All of these venues have an entrance fee, although I don't recall it being very high.

Next for your older children's enjoyment the city boasts Frontier City. It is an amusement park that have various rides. Including several roller coasters, water slides, a water rapids, and kiddie rides. It is expensive to enter the park (like any other) and for the money I would recommend a trip to Dallas and Six Flaggs. Although, you can often get coupons for discounted entrance fees.

Remington Park is a horse racing facility in the city. There are also many other activities that take place throughout the year such as plays, outdoor theater, concerts, sporting events, and rodeos. You can also always go to the one of many movie theaters and see the latest hit.

They also have plenty of wonderful restaurants that you may try for excellent dining experiences. If you like Mexican food I would recommend Alvarado's at 1000 E. 2nd in Edmond.

I have no advice on hotels, since I always stay with my grandparents. I would recommend Oklahoma City and the surrounding area for a vacation, since for the past fifteen years I have been spending time here and enjoying myself.
