The Crystal Ballroom is an large old place, three floors up, run by the McMennamin group. It's a fantastic place for dancing! (Sunday afternoon and evening are swing; they have lessons for beginners and intermediate level. I think there are other dance nights, also.)
There are beautiful murals and chandeliers -- the crowd is friendly and they serve tasty beverages. But the true attraction, the feature that makes this place a mecca for dancers, is the "sprung" dance floor.
I don't know how they built it, but it's a very strange sight to see it swaying up and down. it's fantastic for your feet!
I've danced at the Crystal for special dance workshops, and on a regular Sunday night. There's usually a good live band.
If you do a weekend in Portland and you can possibly extend it to Monday, do it, and take in the swing dancing Sunday night.
