Thank you for the kind words. I was truly a pleasure to visit your scenic state and I will definitely return.
As for the name of the column... I have found references to both names, "Astor Column" and "Astoria Column", but more references to the latter. The AAA Tour Book, the official Astoria / Warrenton website ( www.oldoregon.com ), and a plaque attached to the column itself (photo here: users.saferinternet.com/wildebeest/Astoria%20Column%20Plaque.JPG )all refer to it as the "Astoria Column". Although I am not immune to making mistakes, my information appears to be factual in this instance.

What a comprehensive and (to this Oregon chauvinist) complimentary review! I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to our beautiful state... but, as we're fond of saying, don't tell too many people about it!
One very small nitpicking point: the tower in Astoria is called the Astor Column. It and the town are named for John Jacob Astor, an early 19th century fur-trading tycoon who founded the Astor family fortune.

On our visit (Reply to this comment)
by ifif1938
we stayed in Astoria, went up that column then wended our way south..I was exhausted from stopping every 5 minutes to look at the views....:)
We stayed in Cannon beach with Haystack Rock right outside our window..then Florence where we went on houseback through the dunes...and on and on till we hit Gold beach...Spectacular is not a good enough word for the entire coast. The lightouses, the seals, but alas no whales even though we went on two whalewatch boats looking for them..We even found ourselves in Bandon during one of their festivals and were given honorary membership in their storm watchers club..:)
Loved reading your review and reliving my memories

The Oregon Coast ... (Reply to this comment)
by royalcrowncola
is simply one of the most stunningly beautiful parts of the entire world. Forty years ago Mrs. royalcrowncola and I went there for our honeymoon. We still love to touch the Oregon coast when we are back in the USA.

No, we didn't see any whales, but there are a few places that offer whale watching tours. Also, sea lions are said to be abundant, but we didn't see any sea lions either.

When I visited (7/04) we kept looking for whales along the coast. Never did see one. Great review!-Dave
