Review Topic: Sights & Attractions
I grew up in and around Philly, and remained there until I was twenty-three. I took for granted what I don't have anymore. I moved to New Orleans a little over two years ago and soon began to miss Philly a great deal. (See my review on New Orleans to know how I feel about it here) I'll give you a few of my reasons why...
Cheesesteaks. People down here only know what they are because they sell something similar to one at subway. The best "fast food" available on the planet in my opinion and you have two of the best places to get the across the street from one another in Geno's Steaks and Pat's Steaks. By far the two best steak joints in the world.
Art Museum, a physically massive structure packed with everything from old to new. Exhibits are there frequently and admission is free on Sundays before noon! One of the nicest and largest on the east coast and well worth the trip. And right across from that is boat house row. (A spectacular view at night as it is along the river and lighted homes cast a beautiful reflection on the water) Philly is famous for its Ivy League schools (U Penn and Drexel to name a few) skulling (rowing) is a tradition along the Schuykill river, hence "boat house row" where the Ivy League school fraternities had their houses and are now used for the rowing teams (some are privately owned now)
South Street. One of the most "ecclectic" streets in the country, South street is world famous for its eateries, bars and trendy shopping. Every night of the week you can expect this street to be packed with a wide ranging variety of people having fun in the same place. Down the street from that one of the best club scenes on the east coast Located on Delaware avenue this street is host to all types of nightspots, around 20 of them. Right down from that a little further is the riverfront (festivals and all types of things like concerts go on in the summer) and Jambalaya Jam, the famous Cajun styled festival (New Orleans style) on the river in the summer.
Sports. Eagles, Phillies, Flyers and the Sixers are the pro sports teams hosted by this lovely city. Almost any weekend during the year offers sporting enthusiasts a game to see. With 2 massive indoor sports arenas, and Veterans Stadium (the outdoor home to the Phillies and Eagles) you're sure to get your fill of pro sport here.
History. If your into US History this is the place to be, the birthplace of our fine nation. You can catch the liberty bell, the constitution and about a million other historical sights. Valley Forge (A civil war battlesite) is just 35 minutes away and a great place to spend a day or a weekend)
Shopping. Philly has it all, and if you can't find it here (which is unlikely) New York is just 90 minutes away by train (Philly has 2 major train terminals) Malls, Antiques, You name it you can get it here. Plenty of hotel's and fine restaurants. And if you like to gamble, Atlantic City is only about 45 minutes to an hour away as well!!! Washington DC, is also only 90 minutes away by train if that interests you. Philly is conveniently located right dab in the middle of all of these fun places to visit.
Education. There's so many colleges there I couldn't possibly remember them all but here's a list of most of the major ones there. Temple, Drexel, University of Pennsylvania (Ivy), La Salle, Villanova, St. Joes, Rutgers (right across the river in Jersey) and Penn State University (Has a campus in Philadelphia) you are bound to find quality education there.
Food. Well you know about cheese steaks. No trip to Philly is complete without some Tastycakes too! (Donuts, pies, krimpets YUM!) Go to Chinatown for some good old fashioned chinese food. South Philly is a must if you are Italian. With an incredible Italian Market, you're sure to get the best sausages, cheese, vegetables and baked goods. Like Greek food? Indian food? Philly has it all. A diverse mix of people reside in this wonderful city so there's a diverse array of foods to be eaten.
No matter what you're looking for, Philadelphia offers it!
Close to everything you could need, Philadelphia (Greek for Brotherly Love, and known by that slogan until about 4 years ago when they changed their motto to "The city that loves you back") is a great place to be, has great people, and an even greater tradition.
