| Susie-34668's Full Review: South Carolina |
The past 2 days have been some of the proudest for my husband Len and myself. Let me explain.
We left Florida early on Wednesday morning to travel north to Georgia/South Carolina. Our hotel was actually in Georgia, I will write about that shortly. The reason for this was the hotels near Parris Island put their rates up Wednesdays and Thursday. This is when all the family and friends arrive to spend time with the graduates of Parris Island.
We stayed in Port Wentworth, right next to exit 109 on the I95. Both days we had a 45 minute trip to get to the Island. We continued north on the interstate until we came to SR 278. Traveled east until we reached 170 and continued east until reaching John Smith. On reaching the intersection with 802 we continued east until reaching Parris Island.
Here was tight security. Only visitors with parking permits, previously issued, we allowed to enter. Every i.d. was checked and vehicles were randomly pulled over.
We got to see our new 'Marines' at 1pm on the Thursday afternoon. Len's grandson had done the required 13 weeks of training, and we were the proudest Grandparents you have ever seen. Most of the family were there, Len's daughter and family had traveled down from New Hampshire, and we and other family members had come up from Florida. We got to spend 6 hours with him.
He showed us all the areas that were not off limits to us, and it was fascinating. We got to take a look at the Rifle training area, also where they did their "square bashing" as we call it. The various obstacle courses they had to complete.
However, the most moving time for us was Friday at 10am when they had the ceremony/parade, introducing us to the new Marines.
You might wonder why I am writing about this. There is no way you can go and visit..........unless someone in your family decides to become a Marine.
Still remembering September 11th, I would say to any young people age 18. If you want to make your family proud, why not seriously think about joining.
Can I recommend this destination to anyone. No. You cannot stay there. However, you can stay at Beaufort. It is on a beautiful coastline. We ate in the Coffee House there. Bagels, muffins, biscuits and a wide variety of coffee. Just remember not to go mid-week. Every week is a passing out parade of new Marines. The hotels are really expensive on those nights. Try staying weekends, or Monday and Tuesday.
Final thoughts.
We have visited other towns and cities in South Carolina and had a wonderful stay. There are many enchanting beaches as well as historic areas. I would certainly recommend you spending time in this beautiful state.
I just couldn't wait to tell all my friends about this great young man.
Thank you for reading.
