You can always tell Spring has arrived in this small town of Pendleton, South Carolina. The dogwood trees are in full bloom, the Jonquills have appeared everywhere. It is truly spring in this historical small community and the residents are busy preparing for the big celebration of two fun-filled days of the twenty-third Spring Jubilee, April 1-2, 2000, that will be held on the town's village green in the heart of downtown Pendleton.
This year's celebration will offer the best arts and crafts in the up-country, live entertainment for the young of a clown-mime and juggler who also rides a unicycle, and for the young at heart you will enjoy old time gospel, barbershop music, blue grass and contemporary music. There will be historical tours of the Ashtabula Plantation which was built in 1825 and the Woodburn Plantation, a four-story mansion that was built in 1828. Both Plantations have been restored and are now museums.
If one is looking for something unusual for a gift and can't find it from one of the many booths, you could possibly find it in one of the shops on the village green. Don't forget the food, you can grab a bite to eat at the food booth and get a funnel cake for desert or if you would rather have something different there are restaurants in the area.
The Town of Pendleton was founded in 1790 and is rich in heritage and culture. It is located only minutes from Clemson University; two hours drive from Atlanta, Georgia; two hours drive from Charlotte, North Carolina and two hours drive from the state's Capitol, Columbia, South Carolina.
This is truly a wonderful time of the year as the town opens its doors to hundreds of people from far and near. If one makes a reservation early enough, they could even stay overnight at one of the elegant Inns that's more than 150 years old. If you're looking for a historical weekend getaway, this may be the one you'll always remember.
