Hilton Head has 'class'. Unlike most beach resorts with over commercialized board walks, run of the mill hotel strips and crowded beaches, Hilton Head begs to differ.
I have been visiting Hilton Head for years, at different times of the year and still love and appreciate what this island has to offer as much as the first time.
My favorite location on the island is Sea Pines, which in itself offers everything you might possibly want or dream of. The beach stretches for miles, is never crowded and, at low tide, firm enough to bike or jog on.
You can choose from several top notch tennis facilities. Sea Pines Racquet Club features their exhibition games every Monday night with free wine/beer and snacks. Lots of fun to watch and even a free raffle for tennis gear.
Sea Pines is a haven for golfers, three excellent courses (pricey!), including the famous Harbour Town Links.
My favorite locations for renting a condo are either Harbour Town or South Beach. Per week cost for a 3 BR condo runs about $800 to $1200, less, of course, for the smaller ones. I like the units overlooking the harbour and famous lighthouse, and enjoy the never ending display of beautiful yachts and all the activities associated with keeping them that way!
The bike trails are excellent, paved, and wind all through Sea Pines, through woods, lovely neighborhoods and along the golf courses. Bike rentals are cheap, about $15 per week, and the bikes are comfortable. I advise against bringing your own bikes as you might want to ride on the beach. The salt water and sand will do a job on your expensive bike.
Hilton Head has some of the most challenging miniature golf courses I've ever played - definitely worth checking into and lots of fun for all ages.
Many restaurants can be recommended here, some of my favorites are the Crazy Crab in Harbour Town, The Old Oyster Factory, Truffles, and especially Shuckers for all you can eat crab legs - the best I've eaten anywhere!
The island has been painstakingly developed, strict building codes are in effect and an extreme effort is made to preserve the beautiful native trees and vegetation. Therefore it's quite different from your ordinary beach destination. Make sure you explore all of the island as it is quite different from section to section. Visit all the plantations, each has it's own unique character and charm. With a little careful planning it does not have to be as expensive as most lead you to believe.
And, while you are there, plan to take a boat trip to Dufuskie, a small island just a short distance across the Calibogue Sound, or take a day trip (by boat) to Savannah. You are sure to see plenty of dolphins and many beautiful sights.
Whatever you like to do, it's there for you, and I'm sure Hilton Head will hold many wonderful surprises for you. I keep coming back, again and again! No doubt, so will you...
