I know this is not necessarily about travel, but if you are anywhere near Beaufort County in South Carolina, during the months of April through July, Dempsey Farms is a perfect day trip for the fruit and vegetable lover. Dempsey Farms is located at 1576 Sea Island Parkway, which is actually US Highway 21 South on Saint Helena’s Island, South Carolina. Dempsey Farms is a small family owned and operated farm that has been doing business in the community for over 20 years.
One of the best things about Dempsey Farms is the ability to pick the fruit and vegetables yourself as opposed to having them pick it for you, although they are willing to pick for you. I do not think the price changes if you ask them to pick them for you.
The harvest dates for this year are below and are estimates as it depends upon the weather.
Strawberries April 5 - May 29 (in season now)
Green Beans (snap) May 15 - June 25
Squash May 10 - June 30
Zucchini May 10 - June 30
Cucumbers May 26 - June 30
Pickle Cucumbers May 26 - June 30
Sweet Corn May 26 - June 30
Eggplant June 10 - July 15
Cantaloupe June 10 - July 20
Watermelon June 15 - July 30
Tomatoes June 10 - July 30
Bell Pepper June 10 - July 30
My daughter and I recently spent her spring break at my Mother’s beach house on Fripp Island. A trip to Dempsey Farms is always one of the highlights of our traveling home to see family. My daughter and I spent 4 hours picking enough strawberries to make a years worth of jam. I will admit, between me, my mother, and daughter within a week the strawberries were gone. One of the best parts of picking your own strawberries is of course tasting, which is highly encouraged. Not very many children arrive at the check out point without a strawberry stained face, my daughter included. I will add, not very many adults can withstand the sweet smell of strawberries and they too, HAVE to take a taste of two or three.
The prices of the fruits and vegetables depend upon the harvest as do all farms. The following is a list of the actual and projected prices for each harvest this year:
Strawberries $1.00 a pound (actual)
Green Beans (snap) $14.00 a bushel (projected)
Squash $0.75 a pound (projected)
Zucchini $0.75 a pound (projected)
Cucumber 3/$1.00 (projected)
Pickle cucumbers $0.75 a pound (projected)
Sweet Corn 12/$3.00 (projected)
Each of the following will be sold by size and weight with a price not yet determined: Eggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, tomatoes, and bell peppers.
Living just six hours from Dempsey Farms allows my family to plan their “trips” back home around harvest time. Of course our families know that we are coming to see them, but they also understand that a day or two will be spent on the farm picking the best fruits and vegetables the world has to offer. My family and I have tried many strawberry farms, but Dempsey Farms has always had the best. Because Dempsey Farms is family owned and operated, not only do the offer the best in fruits and vegetables, but also the best in customer service.
