Hilton Head Island is THE place to go for a family vacation to get away from all of the commercialism that most beaches are plagued with. There are strict building codes that disallow tall signs and anything that takes away from the beauty of the island. One visitor will notice that everything looks dull and the same, while another will love the way that commercial property is not allowed to take away from the natural beauty abound!
There are many attractions worth noting that will bring enjoyment for the whole family.
The Beach is wide and beautiful. The sand is soft and is of a lighter color. When you venture into the water, dig a bit with your toe...live sand dollars are plentiful! In the early morning you will find many more large, and intact shells along the Hilton Head shore then you will at many of the beaches along the east coast. The Beaches are never really crowded which allows you a great selection of where to set up camp for the day. There are, however, enough people to please a people watcher! It is also largely a family atmosphere so you do not encounter as many thongs and boobies as you would at a more commercial beach, which is important to me, since I have boys that need to keep their mind out of the gutter=)
There is a nice port and lighthouse where you will see the yachts which belong to the uppercrust. It is a fun place to visit and enjoy an ice cream or lemonade from one of the local specialty shops. You can even climb the stairs in the lighthouse for a good look at the area coast.
The local culture of interest is the Gullah culture. Those of you familiar with the Nickolodian Show Gullah Gullah Island may be surprized to learn that much of the show is filmed in Hilton Head and is a very real culture of the area. You can find lots of info about local Gullah events and attractions either in advance by writing the local Chamber of Commerce, or by asking the hotel at which you will be staying to send you info on the area. There is also a local Gullah festival.
Caligny Plaza is a great place to visit in the evening. There are many specialty shops, and great restaurants that offer live bands and a beautiful atmosphere. There is also a small movie theater here. There are several kiosks that tout local arts and crafts as well!
One thing that I do not know a lot of specifics about, but realize it is one of the main focal points of the island, as well as a main interest of others... is golf and tennis. There are coarses and courts abound.
If you are looking for lots of commercial activities like amusement parks and cheap T shirt shops, Hilton Head is not the place for you. I would recommend it to either a couple who want a golf/tennis/beach getaway, an older couple looking for a quiet atmosphere to relax on the beach and places to stroll around and of course golf and tennis, or a family looking to get away from it all and spend time together, away from hustle and bustle. There are lots or great educational opportunites here and in nearby Savanah GA, or a bit further, Charleston SC.
Hilton Head is a wonderful place to visit, which is why it is my favorite American city
