Well, I just could not stay away! Actually, I had to return for the day to have some work done, so thought I would use it as an excuse to tell you about three more really neat and interesting things to do in Camden, SC.
CUPS, GREAT COFFEE, TASTY EATS
I was without the Dragonmobile for the entire day, but the charming mechanic cheerfully deposited me in downtown Historic Camden, in front of the Library. After a few hours of banging around on their Gateways, reading Epinions, causing mischief, I decided it was time for a coffee break and bite to eat.
Just a short block away from the Library, at 1040A South Broad Street, is CUPS, a charming coffee shop/book store/antiquery that also serves a dynamite pastry or light lunch. Just order the legal stimulate of your choice, peruse the sweets selection, and settle down at a table to while away a few hours, getting wired on caffeine. (Of course they serve decaf, too, and non-fat milk, but why drink coffee if you can't overdose on caffeine and get jittery eyes, it doesn't taste THAT good!)
I ordered my usual cappuchino (all the caffeine and extra cream) and a cup of home-made Cream of Portobello Mushroom soup. Yummy, full of thick slices of mushroom, and not overly thickened with flour. Other choices were creole shrimp salad, fruit salad, and regular tossed salad. You can combine two different salads on one plate, also. Soup alone is $2.50 for a generous cup or $3.00 for a huge bowl. A soup/salad combo is $4.95.
The large selection of sweets starts at assorted cookies and muffins, segues into ice cream (Haagen Dazs in 5 gallon containers, mind boggling, I requested two of the rum-raisin to be delivered to the Weyr, and Starbuck's coffee flavored ice creams), finally ending with a large assortment of sinfully rich and gooey cakes and pies. On offer Thursday were Caramel-Fudge Pecan Pie, thick and creamy traditional Cheese Cake, White Chocolate Mousse Pie, and Carrot Cake, among others. These deserts are only $2.25 per slice.
Not in the mood for that much sugar and fat? Try a bagle with home-made cream cheese. Remember, the Chief Dragon in Residence makes her own cream cheese, too, and knows cream cheese intimately. This is the real deal, melt-on-the-tongue and ooze-down-the-throat kind of cream cheese.
ARTISTS' ATTIC, A BEVY OF TALENTED LADIES
Now full of energy and in need of a stroll to disperse some of it, I left CUPS and meandered on down to 930 South Broad Street, to renew my acquaintance with the ladies of the Artist' Attic, a woman's co-operative studio and gallery. These ladies are doing some wonderful things and you will not find better work at these prices anywhere.
The front of the shop is the gallery, where work is displayed for easy perusal. Currently, five artists are represented. Karen Hord does stunning stained glass and garden pieces, Dot Goodwin is a fantastic framer and specializes in Native American motifs in her sculpture and paper embossing, Lynn Wilson is a talented watercolorist, Lesly Bowers creates wonderful quilts and pieced clothing, and Chris North specializes in sterling silver wire-wrapped jewelry.
At any given time, one or all of these charming gals are at work in the rear, studio section, of the store. They are usually willing to interrupt their creating to chat with interested visitors and explain the techniques being used. If you stop by, be sure and tell them "Hey" from Pamela.
THE AC IN THE DRAGONMOBILE IS BROKEN AND IT IS 100 IN THE SHADE!
Ah ha, now we know why the Chief Dragon in Residence is back in Camden again so soon. On the way to Florida the condenser gave up the ghost, so I had to return to the delightful and ever-amiable Mr. Sherrill of SHERRILL'S AUTOMOTIVE for repairs.
I arrived shortly after 8 A.M. and got the bad news about the condenser. Oh, well, in for a penny, in for a pound, just fix it! Mr. Sherrill diagnosed the problem in no time at all, ordered the parts, and carried me to the Library, promising to have me on my way home by 4 P.M. By golly, that is exactly what happened. I was on my way home with 35-degree air blasting the hair out of my eyes before happy hour.
THE DRAGON HUMBLY SUGGESTS
If you visit Camden, SC, do hit CUPS and ARTIST' ATTIC. You will enjoy both and might find a treasure or two or three to go along with the three pounds from eating cheese cake and the caffeine nerves. Should you have, God forbid, car trouble, call on Mr. Sherrill at SHERRILL'S AUTOMOTIVE. He will take good care of you and not take advantage just because you are from out of town. Be sure and tell everyone "Hey" from their scaly friend, Pamela, Chief Dragon in Residence!
