where would you choose to eat? I heard this question on a "Wine and Food" radio program one day while driving in my car. Without hesitation, I answered to myself, "The Sea Captain's House" in Myrtle Beach.
Of course the people on the program were naming elegant French restaurants in New York or San Francisco or Paris, but I stick by my choice. Let me tell you why.
The Sea Captain's House has been in business as a restaurant on the beach in Myrtle Beach since the late 50's. It was located in an existing house with its own history of belonging to a sea captain. It has been remodeled and added to, but the ambiance of history is there. And the view is not to be believed. If you go, try to get a table next to a window, although you can see the ocean from across the room, as well. Over a period of many years we have visited Myrtle Beach and eaten at the Sea Captain's House once in the 60's and quite a few times in the 80's and 90's. We have watched people walk on the beach. Our favorite was a person walking a "Potbellied Pig" (I hope I've remembered that name right). We saw this person two years in a row. Then a few years ago, there was a family of rabbits hiding in the pile of rocks outside our window.
My husband and I have eaten here many times alone and several times with our children and grandchildren. If you take young children, it's good to have a lot of adults in the party, so one or two can take the kids outside to play on the rocks while you wait for your food or after the children have finished eating. We have some wonderful pictures of my grandchildren taken on the rocks with the ocean in the background. There is a good children's menu of all the usual items plus shrimp. Coloring pages and crayons are furnished for them as well.
Now for the food. They offer almost any kind of seafood you can choose(shrimp cooked many ways, fish, crab, etc.), but my favorite is "Beer Battered Shrimp". It is out of this world. I'm so hungry for it now.
They also serve an excellent green salad...the kind you get at really nice restaurants, with a variety of greens, mushrooms, etc. Hushpuppies are brought to the table early, so you can snack while waiting for your meal, and they are so good it's hard to resist filling up on them.
They also have chicken dishes for when you're not in the mood for seafood.
Reservations are not taken at the Sea Captain's House, so you probably want to arrive early during the summer. We usually get there between 5:00 and 5:30, to get our names on their list. In the height of the season, we have to wait twenty to thirty minutes, but it's definitely worth the wait. The hostesses and servers are very friendly, but also professional.
I probably should mention the prices. They are what you would expect for the food you get and the excellent location - $20-$25 per person. While I'd love to eat here once a month, I probably wouldn't, even if I lived close enough because of the cost. But, for once or twice a year, it is truly a tremendous experience! If you don't see advertisements for the Sea Captain's House, giving the address, just got to the Myrtle Beach Mall, turn toward the ocean and drive North a block or two. You can't miss it!
Added June 1, 2001: We just returned from a trip to Myrtle Beach and a dinner at our favorite restaurant! It was still fabulous! There were six of us this time, four adults and our two grandchildren, ages seven and ten. There were many families with children, including several infants. Everyone was having a good time while waiting for the food to come.Of course the food was wonderful as ever! And we noticed some additional remodeling which just added more interest to the place. I must mention how great the hushpuppies are because eating them reminded me that when we ate seafood on Hilton Head Island two summers ago, both places we ate claimed to have award winning Hushpuppies with much sought after recipes...believe me the HH hushpuppies can't even begin to compare with those at the Sea Captain's House!
Once again, I urge you to check out this great place! Look for an opinion on Sea Watch Resort where we stayed for the first time. I'll get it posted soon.It will change your whole outlook on Myrtle Beach for families!
