Located on the banks of the Big Sioux River in the south-eastern corner of South Dakota, with over 120,00 people, Sioux Falls is the largest city in the four northwestern states of Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota. It is also strategically located at the junction of Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota, making it a commercial, industrial and agricultural hub.
The Falls, for which the city is named, remain a popular local landmark, located just a few blocks from downtown, along with the city's large historic residential and business district.
Sioux Falls is one of the most accessible points in South Dakota with access to Interstates 29 and 90, and most people travel through this Great Plains metropolis to reach other points in the state.
There are over 60 parks throughout the city, offering numerous recreational opportunities. The major employers in Sioux Falls are the health care industry, finance/banking, and food production. Known for its shopping, dining, and hotel accommodations, Sioux Falls has much to offer to boost the area's tourism industry.
There are many unique and exciting things to see and do in Sioux Falls, but it is also a wonderful place to relax and spend time just enjoying the nearly totally crime-free city.
Home to some of the largest banking and credit card industries, like Citibank, and others; two hospitals that rank in the top 100 in cardiac care and cancer care; excellent colleges, universities and technical schools within the city limits, or a short commute away, all make Sioux Falls much more than a "nice place to visit".
The city is friendly, with a strong community feeling - neighborhoods of over a thousand homes hold massive garage sales in the spring, the entire city lights itself for the holidays with fun and delightful things that interest the whole family.
The Sioux Falls Skyforce basketball team competes in the International Basketball League, the Sioux Falls Stampede competes in the USHL hockey franchise, Sioux Falls Storm plays for the National Indoor Football League. The Sioux Falls Canaries are a baseball team in the independent Northern League, and the Spitfire soccer team debuted in May 2001 in the Premier Development League, a subset of the United Soccer League.
The Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science is housed in the former Washington High School, in historic downtown Sioux Falls. Offering a variety of entertainment and educational options, this community cultural center is also home of the South Dakota Symphony. It was constructed in 1906 of native Sioux quartzite, the familiar reddish marbelized rock used throughout this area. The Pavilion features the Husby Performing Arts Center, the Visual Arts Center, the Kirby Science Discovery Center, the Wells Fargo CineDome Theater, and gift shops and cafes.
Twice in its recent history, Money Magazine placed Sioux Falls in the top ten places to live and raise a family. (1987, 1992)
Located in the upper midwest, Sioux Falls does get a fair amount of snow in the winter, and temperatures drop below zero frequently, sometimes stranding travellers who travel the interstates. If planning a trip here in the winter, be advised to pack warm clothing and if you do get "snowed in" find a safe place to hold up, and just relax and enjoy your stay.
The people of Sioux Falls will welcome you warmly.
