Opinion Summary
Elvis has left the building, but there's still lots to do in Memphis!
by diverpam | Jun 21 '01
Pros: Friendly city, southern hospitality, absolute best barbecue in the world!
Cons: It's a long way from Atlanta, New York, or L.A. Is that really so bad?

As with your review of Peabody Place, you've hit another home run with this excellent and highly-detailed review. Once again, you are providing a great service for visitors. We will soon be making our first visit to Memphis, and I've been searching for a review like this from someone who knows Memphis. Thanks so much!!

Excellent job. That brought back a lot of good memories.

My wife and I were actually married at Graceland and we spent a week in Memphis. Out of respect for the great food found there I haven't had any BBQ since.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my review and hope it will be useful for those attending your meeting.

Go to the Rendezvous and eat the ribs next time!

Take care,

I made my first and second visits to Memphis within the last year--first to do a site visit for a meeting we were planning, and second during the meeting itself. On my first visit, a wonderful lady from the CVB took me all around town and she managed to make a whirlwind trip quite memorable. Stayed at the Peabody both times. They really give Southern hospitality a good name. Their shops are good also. Found a beautiful antique amethyst brooch for my wife's birthday on my second stay. Not surprisingly, I sampled Beale St. extensively and concur with everything you cited. Has the best music scene in one small area this side of Austin.

B.B. King's had this great blues band--I think it was a house band--fronted by an earthy black woman and her gorgeous daughter and niece as I remember. Can't remember the band's name, but I saw them twice and they were the real thing. Also, saw this unbelievably athletic kid do an incredible tumbling routine for tips during one of the band's breaks. Never seen anyone--even Air Jordan--get so much elevation. Only thing I wasn't impressed with was the barbeque there. I had much better in another place on my second trip. It was on the corner across Beale from BBs. Again, can't remember the name--one of my flaws, I guess.

I'm hosting another meeting in Memphis (at the Peabody) about a year from now and am already looking forward to going back. If you don't mind, I'm going to share your opinion with my attendees--it's one of the best reviews of any town I've ever read. Thanks for making my evening!

Hi Pam!
We went to Memphis on our 10th anniversary. We stayed in a hotel there, but travelled south to Helena, Arkansas daily for the King Biscuit Blues Fest. Although it rained the whole time, a great time was had by all!

Rendezvous remains as my all-time favorite restaurant. Ribs so good they make your bite your fingers off!

an A to Z guide of Memphis! (Reply to this comment)

That is pretty darn thorough... thanks for the warning about asking for beef barbecue! In Texas the beef brisket is one of my favorites but I'll be sure and ask for the sausage when we make the trip to Memphis. Definitely on my list of places to visit. Thanks again for a great review!

I remember all these sites! (Reply to this comment)

You brought back a lot of memories of the sites in Memphis for me. I went to all of these, including Tunica to gamble :) My husband was there for an extended stay due to brain surgery.

What I don't like about Memphis(which I'm sure is in any larger city) is the amount of beggars and such on the streets. Will work for food..I will shine your wheels for 50 cents...are you going to eat all of that hamburger?

Good review touching on all the great stuff here. When I got to the Corky's part of your review, I was disappointed you didn't mention the Rendezvous, then I read the rest. It is my favorite, too, and I'll bet those gruff no-nonsense waiters make more than I do!!

Enjoyed it!

I wish we had something like a Corky's here. I just learned about them on the Food Networks "Best Of" show and it looks so great. :)

Great review,
